RICH QUEEN CITY HANDICAP Two Hundred and Thirty-Seven Eligibles for Latonias Greatest Two-Year-Old Race. LATONIA, Ky., October 10. The Queen City Handicap, for two-year-olds, at one mile, one of the outstanding stake fixtures of the Latonia autumn season, is the next big event to engage the attention of local horsemen. . This valuable stake with its en-downment of 0,000 added will be run next Saturday. It closed with the record number of 237 nominations, and if there are twelve starters, which seems not an unreasonable expectation, the race will have a gross value of something like S,000. All of the youngsters that recently met in the running of the Fort Thomas Stakes are eligible for this race, and the field will be composed of much the same horses that contested for last Saturdays prize. There is a possibility that the field next Saturday will aiso number among its members a number of eligibles from the East whose owners may be tempted by the rich prize to take a chance at winning it. It is not outside the range of probability that trainer James Rowc may decide to ship Enchantment and one other of the Harry Payne Whitney eligibles West to try for first money. Quite a number of local owners who believe their candidates will be especially well served by the mile distance have within the past few days made known their intention of being represented in the race, and it is becoming evident that the field will be one of excellent quality and size. E. R. Bradleys Betty Beal and Bright Tomorrow, which finished first and .second, respectively, in the Fort Thomas Stakes, are the most prominent of the candidates in training for the race in-the West, and if this pair go to the post in the stake Saturday thev will command the most favor, regardless of what youngsters the easterners may have in the stake. Judging by the splendid showing of both of the Bradley juveniles in their last stake engagement they should have no trouble in successfully going the increased distance next Saturday. The fact that the Queen City is the final stake of the Kentucky fall season for two-year-olds invests it with unusual importance, and is giving it much additional interest. Its running will have an important bearing upon the western two-year-old championship of the year and may decide which of the youngsters is entitled to wear the crown. Up to the present there is no colt or filiy that can claim this honor. The running of the Queen City will mark the second time this year that two-year-olds are asked to go the distance of one mile. The only other occasion was when the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes was decided at the Churchill Downs meeting. The Queen City was established in 1017, and its. winners to date include such high-class examples of juvenile stars as Jane Frances, elico. On Watch, Behave Yourself and Startle, which scored last year for H. H. Hewitt. This season Mr. Hewitt has three entries for the event, of which Easter Bells is regarded as the best.
