TWO FEATURE RACES " I Glaim Attention of Race-Goers at the Latonia Track. c United Verde and Fair Phantom the Winners More Rain and Cold Weather. c0 . s t LiATONIA, Ky., October 10. Two feature n races on todays program claimed the atten- 1 tion of race-goers here and brought out a f goodly attendance despite wintry blasts that c prevailed and prospects of a heavy downpour. Rain came, but only in intermittent I showers, and at times the sun broke through t the deep clouds and flooded the plant with 1 warmth. c While the sprinting handicap was held to be the outstanding attraction, the mile and i seventy yards dash preceding it aroused i considerable interest and likewise brought to the- post a high-class band, including i United Verde, Startle and Deadlock. United Verde ruled the public choice, as he should have done, because of his well- J known liking for such going as he had to run 1 in, but Deadlock, also a pronounced mud y runner, came in for a fair share of support. , The race proved somewhat easy for United , Verde, which,, going into command after , wearing Startle down in the first half mile, j won thereafter under restraint Mooney, his , rider, committed the offense of cutting across j in front of some of the others at the first turn, for which he was suspended for a period of fifteen days. Deadlock was a slight . sufferer by the interference, but he raced . into prominence soon thereafter, only to fall 1 back at the lower turn, and then come again . to out-stay Pindar Peel for third place, but : at no time during the stretch racing did he seem capable of wearing down the winner or Startle. MISS JOT A FAILURE. Montfort Jones entry. Fair Phantom and Miss Joy, was the outstanding favorite for the Grand Hotel Handicap, and while it won, that is to say Fair Phantom did, there was much regret expressed over the dismal showing of Miss Joy. The queen of last years two-year-olds is far from her old self and todav quit badly after going a half mile. On the other hand. Fair Phantom ran a sparkling race, displaying a high order of speed considering the heavy going. She began like a flash and soon was in front, showing the way to the others. Scobie kept he-in the best going and the daughter of Light Brigade ruled supreme throughout. F. J. Kellevs Gangway was second, always holding Centimeter safe, but never seriously menacing the winner. Green Gold was fancied most in the opening dash, but had to give way to Sewell Combs, although the Florisant Stable representative was gaining fast at the end and almost overhauled the winner in the last few strides. In the following race the Florisant Stable fared better, Latrop carrying its colors to an easily achieved victory over Triumph, the latter having a hard time withstanding the closing rush of Montfort Jones Dan E. OSul-livan. Lathrops success was the third straight for the son of Dick Finnell, which i seems equally at home on a fast or heavy The Texas turfman G. L. Blackford furnished a surprise in the third race, when i Kinsman, a colt of his own breeding, dashed I home ahead of Wida and Heel Foot, both of f which were held in greater esteem in a betting way. The applications for trainers licenses of W. H. Bringloe and W. A. McKinney were ; approved by the stewards. SEAGRAM STABLE ARRIVES. . The stable of Edward Seagram, in charge ; or trainer W. H. Bringloe, got in Tuesday r -morning from Canada. The shipment comprised - Brilliant Jester, Golden Sphere, Bulldog - Drummond, Redstone, Quanah, Ciceronian, - Wakefield, Arragosa and Sunbath. C.
