EMPIRE CITYS NEW STAKE 5000 Added WeightforAge Bace Meets Approval Rank and File of Racegoers See Great Pos ¬ sibilities in Recently Announced Mile Contest for All Ages NEW YORK N T January 13 No races hi the autumn period surpass in intercsl those designed to bring the best horses In the ailaged division together whether at a sprinting distance or over the mile course which is about as far as juveniles are asked to race though there was a time when greater demands were made upon the cour ¬ age and endurance of our young horses horsesTests Tests of this character have not been of ¬ fered frequently in recent years and for this reason the announcement that the Em ¬ pire City Racing Association will add 5000 to a weightforage race for twoyearolds and upward at a mile to be run at the Yonkers track next autumn has met with the unqualified approval of the rank and file of racegoers racegoersTO TO KEEP KT FROXT RAX3C RAX3CThey They see In it a further desire on the part of president James Butler to keep Em ¬ pire City in the front rank of Metropolitan courses Every year finds a new stake or two added to the Empire City program by secretary Victor Schaumburg That this pro ¬ gressive policy is popular is attested by the patronage given the course which lias a clientele peculiarly its own Such an event as this allaged race will not only be diverting as a spectacle but it will give a line on the capabilities of our twoyearolds whose trials against the threeyearolds and the members of the handicap division will bring into play every reserve in speed and stamina That a good twoyearold can hold its own with the older horses has been demonstrated on in ¬ numerable occasions not only here but abroad a notable instance being furnished by Plaudit which defeated Ben Brush at a mile and a sixteenth when the Dwyer cham ¬ pion was at his best more than twenty years ago agoThe The demands made upon twoyearolds or those that have barely passed that age may be gathered from the statistics taken from Kriks Guide of 1SSO At Atlanta Ga on January 6 six days after he was techni ¬ cally a threeyearold Ben Hill by Bonnie Scotland beat the old campaigner Governor Hampton a race of mile heats the youngster taking the last two over a heavy track An ¬ other instance of precocity found in the same volume has to do with the winning of the Savannah Cup at two miles by the filly Round Dance by War Dance subse ¬ quently the dam of the good horse Don Alonzo This race was run on January 20 so that the filly was little more than a two yearold at the time The fair performer Vagrant was among those she defeated defeatedGLORIOUS GLORIOUS CONTESTS OF OLD OLDAt At this same Savannah meeting on Janu ¬ ary 24 the twoyearold filly Emily F by Kingfisher Bonnie Doon by Balrownie won the Lamar Stakes at mile heats in 146 and 150 Later in 1880 we find Hindoo Kip ple Spinaway and other twoyearolds win ¬ ning at a mile against those of their own age while the great filly Thora by Long ¬ fellow which later gave the turf Yorkvillc Belle Sir Francis and other good ones beat some of the cracks of the handicap division Continued on eleventh page EMPIRE CUTS NEW STAKE Continued from first page Her best race was for the Merchants Stakes at Baltimore on October 19 when she low ¬ ered the colors of the stout campaigner Crickmore CrickmoreAnother Another stayer among the twoyearolds of that year was the gray filly Spark by Lea ¬ mington Mary Clark the property of Georgo Lorillard a sportsman who was ever ready to send his horses to the post against all comers and whose popularity was as great as that of any man on the turf at the time he honored it with his patronage Spark won an open handicap at Jerome Park on No ¬ vember 2 over the mile and an eighth course Those who recall the deep sandy footing of the old saddlebags course will understand the nature of the test which called for quite as much endurance as a mile and a half race over one of our modern tracks tracksIt It is to be hoped that the enterprise of the Empire City management will meet with the recognition it so richly deserves When the Champion Stakes closes on Febru ¬ ary 1 owners and trainers should be gener ¬ ous in their nominations so that a thoroughly representative field will go to the post for the prize which should be one of the features of the autumn season seasonFAVORS FAVORS JLONG DISTANCE RACES RACESThe The disposition to bring about a return of longdistance racing which is general in the ranks of the Jockey Club is getting support from the Empire City management The announcement of the increase of the Empire City Handicap to a mile and a quarter comes from headquarters at 2030 Broadway As this feature has an added value of 5000 it ranks with the Suburban Brooklyn Excel ¬ sior and other features run for prior to tho opening at Saratoga This race will also close on February 1 It is for threeyear olds and over Other races for the same division to be decided during the midsummer period and for which entries will also be due on the first of next month are the Yonkers and Mt Vernon Handicaps each with 4000 added the former at one mile and a sixteenth and the latter at a mile the Fleetwing with 3000 added at about threequarters the Mt Kisca Stakes 3000 added for mares and entire horses at one mile and seventy yards the Melrose Selling Stakes of a cash value of 3000 added at a mile and a quarter for colts and fillies geldings barred is an event well worth tho patronage of the leading stables of the country The Knickerbocker Handicap 3000 added at a mile and a sixteenth is another substantial offering The Tarrytown Selling Stakes with a guarantee cash value of 3000 at a mile is the third test offered exclusively for three ycarolds ycaroldsAs As usual the prizes for the twoyearolds are satisfying the East View carrying a cash value of 10000 with the Whirl having a value of 7500 The former will be run over the short threequarters route while the Whirl
