Here and There on the Turf More About BedwelTs Li ¬ cense censeDistributing Distributing the Brookdale Blood BloodBrown Brown Prince n and His Brother The Maryland State Racing Commission has felt that it should give reasons for the issuance of a trainers license to H G Bedwell In substance the reason is that Bedwell has prom ¬ ised to be good and that his conduct has been satisfactory during the last year also that he has been punished sufficiently The commis ¬ sion winds up its explanation with the ex ¬ pressed hope that its decision will be accepted without question and acquiesced in by all of the associations conducting racing in Mary ¬ land This hope suggests a fear that there may be some opposition to Bedwell by some of the associations As a matter of fact a license to train does not bind any of the associations in other states to accept the man so licensed Bedwell has a license to train in Maryland and he has gone that far in his battle for reinstatement Now if he is accepted on the various Maryland tracks ho has attained all that the commission has sought to restore to him When Harry Payne Whitney sold two such horses as Goshawk and Whiskaway last year he did more than sell two highly bred horses He made a wider distribution of the thor ¬ oughbred blood that has made his Brookdale Farm in New Jersey so famous Goshawk is a son of Whisk Broom II and Dovelet and this combines the best of the Brookdale blood with the best from the Castletcn Stud of the late James R Keene Whisk Broom II is a son of Broomstick and Audience Broomstick is a son of Ben Brush and Elf daughter of Gal liard while Ben Brush was a son of Bramble and Rosevillc by Reform Dovelet the dam of this sterling threeyearold is a daughter of Peter Pan and the English mare Cushat a daughter of Hermit Peter Pan is a son of Commando the best son of Domino and his dam Cinderella a daughter of Hermit Thus it will be seen that Peter Pan the maternal grandsire of Goshawk goes directly to the Himyar blood and his dam Cinderella being a daughter of Hermit gives Dovelet a double cross of that desirable strain close to her pedigree pedigreeBred Bred as Goshawk is he is sure to be a valua able stock horse and ought to bring new importance to Gifford A Cochrans Mount Kisco Stud when his racing days arc over overWhiskaway Whiskaway the colt sold to C W Clark has a like ancestral right to be of great value in breeding and it is well that he should go lo a new field of endeavor where he will find other blood for blending There is a close relationship in the breeding of these colts for I while both have Whisk Broom II for sire the dam of each has a strong infusion of the Him 3ar blood Inaugyral the dam of Whiskaway is a daughter of the English stallion Voter and from Court Dress a daughter of Disguise nd Hampton Belle by Hampton Disguise was a son of Domino but Court Dress also had the advantage of Hampton blood from England EnglandMr Mr Whitney made another important sale when Walter J Salmon bought the mare Panoply from him This mare is a daughter of Peter Pan and Inaugural and was bred to Broomstick Her produce will be closely re ¬ lated to Whiskaway for she is bred to his paternal grandsire grandsireThen Then still another distribution of this Brook dale buood has recently been made in the leasing of Wildair and Upset to Kentucky breeders This all means much for thorough ¬ bred production and Mr Whitney still re ¬ tains all of the sturdy strains that have made his farm so famous while other breeders will have an opportunity for the best of out Another breeding transaction of importance is the purchase by Hal Price Headley and Frederick Johnson of the William B Miller interest in the English stallion Brown Prince H This nineyearold son of Dark Ronald and Exccllcnza was imported in 1920 and has not yet had an opportunity to prove his worth but few importations have attracted more at ¬ tention among breeders than this handsome English horse Arthur B Hancock has a brother to Brown Prince H in Ambassador IV and the blood is of such importance that 1913 the sire of both of these stallions Dark Ronald was sold to Germany for a big price priceIt It is probable that Mr Miller would not have sold his interest in Brown Prince II had it not bscn for his importation of Golden Guinea a son of Polymelus and Miranda the latter a daughter of Gallinule and Admiration by Saraband It is the intention of Mr Miller to give this young horse every opportunity and the young mares he had booked to Brown Princs H will have their engagements trans ¬ ferred to the more recent importation
