MUDDY TRACK FEARED Showers Yesterday at New Or ¬ leans and More Threatened More Races for TwoYearOlds to toBe Be Carded Judge Murphy MurphyReturns Returns to His Post NEW ORLEANS La January 14 Rain and sunshine alternated here today Sev ¬ eral brisk showers fell but up until night ¬ fall track conditions at the Fair Grounds had not been changed The outlook is for more rain however and the racegoers are in a quandary as to what sort of going to ex ¬ pect tomorrow tomorrowThe The past week proved to be nearly as dis ¬ astrous as its predecessor so far as winning favorites were concerned The choices again were bowled over with disgusting regularity and the layers enjoyed by far the best of the battle The present meeting has been the worst in this respect since the revival of racing in this locality but the downfall of the most favored ones has been due to bad racing luck in a few cases and inferior riding Close contests have been in order at all times but it appears as though the choices just cannot get the breaks in their favor favorJudge Judge Joseph A Murphy returned from Henderson Ky tonight where he went to toi i attend the funeral of starter A B Dade He Hewill will resume his duties in the stewards stand 1 tomorrow and J B Campbell will go back backto to his old position of placing judge judgeThe The gloom occasioned by the death of starter Dade has not entirely lifted from the race track here yet His assistants William Snyder William Hamilton George Paul and Mick Harris seem to be espe ¬ cially affected and their grief is plain to be seen seenJUVENILE JUVENILE RACES POPULAR POPULARA A twoyearold race will inaugurate the present weeks racing and it will mark the first race of the meeting for the juveniles under claiming conditions Racing secretary Joe McLennan is confident that he will be able to fill at least four races a week for the twoyearolds during the remainder of the meeting as starter William Snyder was enabled to school them every day during the past week There are not as many two yearolds here as in some former years but a sufficient number is on hand to provide races as often as every other day at least leastThe The announcement of a 10000 added Lou ¬ isiana Derby at Jefferson Park to be run on March 17 was hailed with joy by the horse ¬ men There are more than the usual num ¬ ber of good threeyearolds here this winter to the winter racing The Jefferson Park officials are confident that they will draw horses here from other sections for tho race and to that end will send entry blanks to every race track in America Some of the thrceyoarolds in winter quarters elsewhere could be prepared for the Louisiana Derby within two months This race would also serve to aid in their training for the more important Ixtures in the north and east eastBest Best Pals success in his only two races here make him loom up as perhaps the best horse that has raced over the Fair Grounds course in many a day He seems to havo regained the form that made him a star in the E R Bradley stable for a long while It is doubtful if there is a horse hero that can beat him over a considerable distance of j ground unless he is outweighted
