Here and There on the Turf Notes of Preparation Empire Citys New Stake StakeRace Race Racing Dates Due Soon The Empire City Racing Association is early in the field with its announcements of stakes for 1923 Its list for the summer meeting is identical with that of last year These stakes will close February 1 and arc sixtezn in number What is of importance in this list is the announcement of a 5000 added stake race to be run at tha fall meeting This is at a mile for all ages at weight for age ageFrequently Frequently in October when the Empire City Association conducts its autumn racing there have been horses come to a form that was not theirs earlier in the racing season They have been kept away from various of their engagements by reason of sickness or through not coming to hand early enough to make good These have limited opportunities in October and this race will be a most wel ¬ come one oneThe The racing season of 1922 came to a close with no generally accepted champion being crowned among the two and threeyearolds This was largely because of the fact that many of the best of both ages were in the hospital list in the spring and early summer racing There was no dearth of good threeyearolds but the possibly two best KaiSang and Lucky Hour did not meet all through the year This Autumn Championship Stakes as the new Empire City race is to be known might afford a chance for a decision of the matter in every age division for it is for all ages although hardly valuable enough to atract all aspirants Last October there was some talk of such a race and this addition to the stake list grew out of it This is the only one of the October offerings that is to bs closed with the closing of the spring stakes The offerings for the later meeting are to close much later in the year yearWith With the announcement of the stake pro ¬ grams the work of the present new racing season is going forward Announcement of the racing dates will probably be made for the Kentucky spring meetings sometime this week and it is known that the Maryland State Racing Commission will shortly make known its allotment of racing dates in that state New York dates have usually been made pub ¬ lic in the last few years after both the Mary ¬ land and Kentucky announcements Time was vheu the New York racing season began April 15 and continued until November 15 but that racing season has been considerably reduced and there is scant chance for a return to that old order of things Maryland has grown to great importance since the days of that early opening and late closing in New York Last year New York racing opened May 3 and continued until October 28 That gave an abundance of racing and it is not expected that the racing year will be any longer in 1923 Even with those dates there is a spring conflict with ths Pimlico meeting while the fall conflict with Maryland con ¬ tinues in September and October OctoberThe The various associations have at this tune made up their schedule of dates wanted It is usual that this schedule is pretty closely adhered to by the Jockey Club stewards in awarding the dates
