FAST SPRINTERS IN BATTLE Feylance Triumphs Over Speediest Horses at Tijuana Track Bnclvhorn II and Woodic Montgomery One OneTwo Two In Secondary Feature Jockey Halls Hallsin in the Clutches of the Law SAN DIEGO Cal January 14 What might have been termed the extreme speed of the course was assembled in the Quickstep Handicap at five eighths of a mile which was the feature of the program at Tijuana Saturday It brought together a mighty ag ¬ gregation of sprinters with the fleet Motor Cop assigned top burden of 123 pounds Despite his crushing impost he ruled a strong favorite and drew the bulk of the speculation in both the books and the mutual machines However he was unequal to the strenuous task and after showing the way until well into the stretch he gave it up and finished far back in the bunch The first honors went to the J K Li Ross colt Feylance which took a handy victory over Judge Pryor and Krewer with Brilliant Ray next in order It took the trained eye to separate the last named three as they finished only inches apart With but a slight delay starter Mor rissey sent the fashionable field away from the barrier and at once Motor Cop appeared in the lead His margin was but a small one as Judge Pryor was right at his throat latch and the two raced in this manner until turn ¬ ing for home Here Judge Pryor forged to the front but his lead was shortlived as Krewer and Brilliant Ray drew up on even terms with him to give battle The former horse under keen pressure bore out in the run to the wire and seriously hampered Brilliant Ray while the latter was going great guns Undoubtedly it kept Brilliant Ray from being a more serious factor in the decision of the race In the meanwhile Fey ¬ lance which had escaped interference came with an electric burst of speed on the inside and while the leaders were engaged in their bumping match he annihilated space and eventually forged to the front to win by open daylight Judge Pryor under despe ¬ rate riding lasted long enough to be second while Krewer got the verdict for the small end of the purse purseTOUGH TOUGH LTJCK FOR PIEDRA PIEDRAThe The secondary feature of the day a high class mile and onesixteenth claiming race resulted in a nip and tuck finish in which the Irwin Brothers horses Buckhorn II and Woodie Montgomery racing under separate interests finished onetwo Piedra was third but it must be said that as the race was run he was pounds if not tons the best His start was so poor that it seemed an act of felly on the part of jockey Stevens to at ¬ tempt to overtake the others Howevsr the rider elected to set sail after the leaders and making up lost ground he turned into the stretch within hailing distance of the leaders gamely kept Piedra to his task and with the big crowd giving vociferous encouragement to horse and rider the gallant thoroughbred came through the final quarter with amasing speed and stamina However his effort was a futile one as he was beaten a neck and nose by Buckhorn II and Woodie Montgom ¬ ery The winner paid better than 23 to 1 and those who faithfully follow the C B Irwin horses had cause to shout with glee when the lucrative price was displayed displayedJockey Jockey G Rose the diminutive apprentice rider who only recently scored his initial saddle success was again in the limelight Saturday when he rode the despised outsider Pewaukee to an easy triumph in the opening race Shcka which finished second was probably best as she left the starting post in last position to ultimately close a great gap Pewaukee paid the long price of 3180 in the mutuals and his form had heretofore been so poor that his victory was entirely un Icokcd for forYouth Youth was served in the second race when the threeyearolds Melchoir and Noonhour fought it out and finished in front of the others opposed to them Noonhour was given the most support but the twelve pounds pull in weights that was Melchoirs proved Noon hours undoing and he was bested a head for the long end of the purse by his lightweighted rival rivalAgain Again in the first race at fiveeighths of a mile the favorite suffered defeat by a nar ¬ row margin This was Rosa Atkin which just failed to get up by a scant nose Lady Bourbon the pacemaker won in a hard struggle struggleBrian Brian Kent and Fabcr were backed al ¬ most to the exclusion of the others in the fourth and they finished as the wagering in ¬ dicated Brian Kent which ruled a slight favorite over Fabcr raced the latter into de ¬ feat by the time the homestretch was reached and in the run to the finish he drew out de ¬ cisively cisivelyThe The concluding race of the day marked the first mile and a quarter race of the season and it proved a good contest up to the last fifty yards where Wise Judge coming from the rear took the lead to win by two lengths Racing in second place was Judge David while Chick Barkley outstayed the pace CoRtinuetl on second page FAST SPRINTERS IN BATTLE Contnned from first page maker Shoreacres for the consolation end of the purse purseBut But a single claim developed during the day The medium of this was Noonhour which H E Davis acquired from C B Irwin out of the second race for 800 The crack handicap horse Georgie showed one of the most promising trials of the morning when he worked threequarters in 1 14 Col i R L Baker of Kentucky in whose colors the consistent horse races was elated with the geldings showing and voiced his intentions of sending Georgie to the post at an early date dateWhile While driving his high powered au ¬ tomobile from the town of Tijuana to the race track over the paved highway jockey C Rails struck and severely injured an un ¬ known woman pedestrian The injured one was rushed to a San Diego hospital where her condition was reported to be serious Rails who is said to have been traveling at a high rate of speed was arrested by the Mexican authorities and incarcerated in the Mexican jail where he was released later on under heavy bail bailThe The first of the Tijuana salient features will be decided Sunday January 21 when the Tijuana Claiming Stakes will be offered for the edification of the western racing fans This race is a gallop of one mile and sev ¬ enty yards for a purse of 2500 added Among the notable nominations are Ten But ¬ tons Knighthood Jim Daisy Krcwer Aba dane Crystal Ford Messines Feylance Johnny Dundee Halu Tassel
