Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of January 15 1903 Racing at Oakland New Orleans and New ¬ port At Newport the riding star of the day was jockey Mountain who rode Juniper and Wil ¬ liam F II to victory Edward Corrigan scored a double during the day his bay mare LEntrenne winning the third race and his other winner being Hargis Starter Dwyer seems to inspire jockey Bull man when he presides in the starters stand Bullman rode three winners at Oakland today and was easily the outstanding riding star He had four mounts and won with three of them His first two winning efforts were nose and head finishes the third being an easy vic ¬ tory for Ignacio which won by a length and a half Jockey King who is to do the riding for the stable of S J Smith the coming season sus ¬ tained a severe fall while exercising Northern Star at Gravesend track recently The horse reared up and fell back landing squarely on the rider The boy was picked up in an un ¬ conscious condition and it was believed at first that he was badly hurt He was carried to the stable and a physician summoned who worked over him half an hour before signs of life were apparent He came around all right but complained of severe pains in the head headIt It is reported that secretary Nathanson of the Harlem Jockey Club has notified horse ¬ men that jockey Winkfield has had his sus ¬ pension removed by the Harhm judges Wink field was sent for by judge Hamilton at Har ¬ lem last fall to explain his ride in a certain race He ignored the summons and remained away from the judges stand The judges sat him down for contempt of court and the dis ¬ cipline cost Winkfield a lot of money for he was in demand in Chicago The remission of the punishment will enable him to accept mounts outside of the Corrigan Stable which has second call on his services He is under contract to P Dunne DunneHargis Hargis a son of Hanover owned by Edward Corrigan and ridden by Redfern won the fea ¬ ture handicap at New Orleans The talent figured that most of the opposition in this race for Hargis would come from Carl Kahler from the stable of J Ownbey Carl Kahler looked like the winner right up to the stretch turn having a big lead from the start When the turn for home was reached however he quit badly and Redfern who had waited with Hargis called on his mount and he quickly took the lead with The Messenger and Fort Royal in his wake Carl Kahler made a com ¬ plete job of quitting finishing fourth and only beating Ray the other starter by a few lengths Ray never had a chance being far back during the entire running of the race
