REMOVE EUCALYPTUS TREES TREESUprooted Uprooted to Make Room for Tan foran Grandstand and Club ¬ house Opening June 1 SAN FRANCISCO Cal January 19 Superintendent A M Allen heaved a deep sigh of rejief today when the last of the eucalyptus trees on the highway side of the Tanforan race course was uprooted by his gang of workmen The task of clearing space for the grandstand and clubhouse has been a long one having been started last August The tall trees were planted shortly after the old track was founded by Prince Poniatowski The imposing rows of eucalyp ¬ tus on the southern and northern boundaries of the inclosure will not be disturbed as they make an ideal windbreak windbreakTho Tho trees that have been removed were necessary in the old days as the backstretch was then on the highway side of the course Under the rearrangement of the Pacific Coast Jockey Club the old backstretch has been widened and changed into the front stretch stretchThe The fittings for the grand stand have been delivered at the track and the delivery of the steel framework has been promised by the end of the month Grace Bernieri who were awarded the contract for the grandstand will also construct the clubhouse which will be to the south of the large struc ¬ ture with the paddock between the two buildings buildingsThe The problem of the transportation of the thousands of men and women expected to attend the races is engaging much time on the part of the directors of the Tanforan organization Both the Southern Pacific steam trains and the Market Street Railway Companys electric cars pass alongside the race course but not on the side of the grand ¬ stand standThere There is talk of allowing the street cars to run into the inclosure If the plan were carried out the rails would be laid south of the coursa itself between rows of trees that now form a picturesque lane for pe ¬ destrians Some of the directors say the spur would be a disfigurement to the beau ¬ tiful grounds and believe some other method of getting the people to the grandstand from the street cars should be adopted adoptedRacing Racing manager Robert F Leighton has suggested a covered runway from the present line of the electric cars that could be used by the racing fans on inclement days In pleasant weather he is of the opinion the spectators woudd enjoy walking out in the open from the car tracks to the grandstand grandstandQuite Quite a proportion of tne attendance will come from automobile parties On rainy days however it is expected the travel by rail will be heavy heavyThe The opening is now scheduled for the first part of June
