Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of January 20 1903 Racing at New Orleans Newport and Oak ¬ land landA A Feathcrstone has decided that he doesnt need a successor to jockey Winnie OConnor who is under contract to ride in France Hav ¬ ing secured second call upon the services of Willie Shaw Mr Featherstone will place his main reliance on that jockey this year at least When George E Pittsburg Phil Smith who has first call on Shaws services starts a horse in a race where Mr Featherstone has an entry the latter will of course be com ¬ pelled to look elsewhere for a jockey He is perfectly willing to take chances however While exercising the steeplechase horse Dick Furber over the Montgomery Park jumps Tete Clay the onetime famous colored jockey fell and suffered what may proue seri ¬ ous injuries Clay was going at full speed with Dick Furber when the horse stumbled and pitched the jockey headlong into the fence which forms the sides of the jump Clay was picked up unconscious and taken to the sta ¬ bling quarters of H S Tracy Co for whom Clay had signed to ride this year Ck was prominent a few years back by his handlin of the famous mare Imp ImpDespite Despite the fact that the Kentucky Derby is three months away horsemen are taking con ¬ siderable interest in the event and the chances are that a winter book on tha race will be opened this week by a Chicago bookmaker At present there are 102 youngsters which are eligible to the Derby and the final declarations will not be made until March 2 Secretary Price and others think that a fine band of threeyearolds will be left in the event and that a great field will face the starter G C Bennett of Memphis not discouraged by his bad showing last year will point his Cayuga colt Canyon for the Derby Ed Brown will depend on Mallory his Magnetizer colt for a starter Of course Mallory may not prove to be a Ben Brush yet he is well thought of Frank Bruhns who is always showing up in the spring with something sensational is training Harding at Nashville expecting to start him at Louisville E Corrigan has some youngsters by his former Derby winner Riley and he will send something to the post W W Darden also at Nashville thinks he has in Sioux Chief a Derby horse P Dunne entered Savable the Futurity winner and he would have been a factor were it not for the fact that Dunne sold Savable to John A Drake List season and Drake may not come to Louis ¬ ville However it is hoped he will as he would have a great chance to place this trophy to his credit since he has in his stable Savable and Van Rousse two as likely threeyearolds as can be found in the west and both eligible While Dunne has parted with Savable he has that good colt Early son of Troubadour and his chances are sweet In fact Early is looked upon as a fit subject to aspire to the highest honor so well is he thought of by the public C R Ellison has in Skilful a colt that will not be overlooked but is also eligible While the newspapers say Elision will save the son of Mirthful for the American Derby he will not pass by a stake that carries with it such money value and sentiment as docs the Ken tucky Derby Ellison is too good a sportsman for that J W Schorr disposed of Onatas his bsst material for Derby honors and will de ¬ pend on Janeway to carry his colors There are many other formidable youngsters that will be let in such as Irby Bennett Watkins Overton Sheriff Bell Benvolio Henry Mc Danicl Gold Bell Marlin Bad News etc and the Derby of 1903 like some of its predeces ¬ sors will make turf history
