DISPLAYS DERBY QUALITY Handsome Honeywood Colt Pais ¬ ley in Good Performance Convincingly Masters Good Band of Horses Horsesof of Own Age Poacher Again Disappoints Old Rhymer to the Front SAN DIEGO CaL January 10 When Paisley the handsome threeyearold son of Honeywood and Busy Bee cantered home first in the El Toro Handicap the one mile feature exclusively for horses of his age he demonstrated that he is of excellent Derby caliber and a thoroughbred which must be reckoned with when the big threeyearold event of the Tijuana meeting is decided decidedIt It was in the sixth race that Paisley won his laurels and convincingly mastered a good band of colts and fillies He met the speedy Joella J at equal weights each carrying 107 pounds and humbled her in a manner which left little doubt in the minds of the people that Joella J will not do over the Derby dis ¬ tance tancePaisley Paisley carried the colors of Marvin Allen of San Diego Both his owner and trainer gave out the word that tliey were confident that the chestnut colt would make every post a winning one by a wide margin and their words of wisdom rang true for such was the case Heavily backed Paisley opened up a gap in the first quarter with jockey Carter having a snug hold of him He cantered the remainder of the way In ¬ deed Carter sat as still as a statue during the run through the stretch and had he elected the colt could have won by much more than the two lengths recorded The real contest in the race was for second money Tassel from the Bostwick barn took this part of the purse but it required the hardest kind of riding and nursing on the part of jockey Taplin to land his mount ahead of Bowsprit the latter finishing like a thunderbolt right at the end and only missed the mark by a scant nose Joella J failed dismally She chased the winner for a half mile then grew leg weary and fell back to the rear eventually finishing in last position positionA A large band of threeyearold maidens met in the introductory race The public was at sea as to which to make favorite and in consequence four horses were backed al ¬ most to the exclusion of the others These were Jolly Sailor Bacchus Smile Again and Iris Girl The winner turned up in the last named filly which bested Bacchus in a busy finish by the major part of a length Smile Again really never had a chance to race to advantage as she was caught in a jam soon after the start and when jockey Taplin final ¬ ly found a clear course she was almost in Continued on eleventh page DISPLAYS DERBY QUALITY Continued from first page last place At that she made up ranch ground to be a fast going fourth fourthPoacher Poacher installed tho favorite in the sec ¬ ond race at threequarters again disappoint ¬ ed for after leading to the paddock he gave up in favor of Vanessa Welles and Cabin Creek CreekThe The skeptical ones who were of the opinion that Virge would not be able to carry her speed over threequarters were fooled when the nineyearold mare stood a hard drive and outlasted Tom Craven and Nebraska Lad in a threehead finish The latter was heav ¬ ily backed but was outpaced to the last six ¬ teenth where he came with a belated rush only to lose by a short margin marginRhymer Rhymer was fleet of foot yesterday and showed the way from the barrier to the fin ¬ ishing post to those opposed to him in the fourth Veteran and Little Gink were the favorites and carried the bulk of the specu ¬ lation They failed badly in their task neither of them being among the first three Bessie Young was second with Dora at her throatlatch third thirdThe The fifth race brought together a big field which have never won at a mile or over In this the C B Irwin colors were successful when Harry Rudder led throughout to win in easy fashion from F G Corley and May ¬ flower flowerThe The oddson choice May Maulsby had a narrow escape from defeat in the seventh when she just managed to outstay Horinga and Harrigans Heir for the long end of the purse Undoubtedly May Maulsby was the best for she lost much ground by coming wide turning for home Despite this she came on again when straightened away and got up to win in the final strides stridesLouis Louis came from far ba sc to take an easy victory from Katherine Rankin the pace ¬ maker and Black Thong in the concluding race of the afternoon The latter made an impressive showing for the first time out coming with a burst of speed at the end which promises better deeds in the future futureJockey Jockey T Wilson was given thre days on the ground by the stewards for cutting across in front of the others in the seventh race with Harrigans Heir
