CHIEF SPONSOR AGAIN CanadianBred Racer Scores His Fourth Victory at Havana Golden Bed and Golden Chance ChanceWinning Winning Combination for the theHunch Hunch Followers HAVANA Cuba January 19 Chief Spon ¬ sor the Canadianbred son of Hearts of Oak Widow Wise ran one of the best races of his career this afternoon when he won the H M S Calcutta Handicap a dash of five and a half furlongs which brought to ¬ gether a field of fast sprinters This race was named for the flagship of the West In ¬ dian division of the British Navy cruising about in these waters It was fitting that it was won by a Canadian racer Chief Spon ¬ sor ridden by jockey C Williams set his opponents a terrific pace from the start and was never headed beating the favorite Bella of Elizabethtown by three parts of a length The fractional time of the race was 23 46 105 105Todays Todays victory was the fourth Chief Sponsor scored at the meeting of his thir ¬ teen starts and he has been unplaced but three times timesThe The afternoons sport was marked by stir ¬ ring finishes in which the winners won under hard drives to beat their opponents by small margins marginsPolite Polite came from behind in the first race and got up in the last fifty yards to beat the tiriijg pacemake Abe Sabalatosky by a scant length lengthHAZEL HAZEL W NARROWLY NARROWLYIn In the second race Hazel W was the last but in entering the home stretch she closed with a great burst of speed and finishing fast just made it in time to nip the tiring Gratian in the final strides The Cuban bred Veneno set a fast pace for the greater part of the way and tired at the end just managing to last long enough to beat Grit for the short end of the purse purseGolden Golden Red made all the pace in the fourth and in a desperate finish beat the favorite Drapery by half a length The latter was only a nose in front of Thistle Queen which closed with a rush rushGolden Golden Chance made every post a winning one in the fifth and triumphed over Bruce Dudley by three lengths lengthsJockey Jockey McDermott was suspended for three days by the starter for disobedience at the post postMr Mr and Mrs Harvey Meyers of Coving ton Ky were among the days arrisals at the Jockey Club Mr and Mrs George Miller of Louisville have also taken up their abode at the clubhouse apartments apartmentsC C K G BILLING S A VISITOR VISITORMr Mr C K G Billings of Chicago and a party of five arrived from Florida this eve ¬ ning and will occupy apartments at the Jockey Clubhouse during their stay in Ha ¬ vana Mr Billings and his party have been cruising in the Chicagoans yacht which ia now at anchor at Key West WestWm Wm A Pratt of New York and W E Murphy of Troy N Y arrived on the Me gantic This is their second visit to Havana Last year they were guests at the Jockey Club This year they have arranged to oc ¬ cupy a bungalow on Avenue Columbia near general manager Bruens residence where they will remain until the close of the racing season Mr Murphy is one of Troys promi ¬ nent citizens and the son of the U S Sena ¬ tor from the Empire State StateMrs Mrs E L Wood arranged to ship her horse Billy Bern to New Orleans on Satur ¬ day in charge of trainer C S Johnson She will remain there a short time and expects to go to Lexington to pick up a couple of horses for the spring racing season seasonW W Blaino Patton sporting editor of the Indianapolis Star arrived today for a brief visit This is his first visit to Cuba and he was agreeably surprised at the beauty and extent of the Oriental Park plant
