FAVORITE INDOOR SPORTS Picking the Prospective Winner of 1923 Kentucky Derby Chances Bright for a Filly to Repeat Re ¬ grets Unequalled Triumph of Year 1915 LOUISVILLE Ky February S The favorite indoor sport in Kentucky just now is trying to pick the Kentucky Derby winner of 1921 Among the colts given consideration ire Zev Enchantment Bud Lerner Messen ¬ ger and Donges Some of the close followers of form will not be surprised if a filly cap ¬ tures the 50000 prize at Churchill Downs on May 19 In the fortyeight years that the Derby has been run only one filly has been good enough to win it and that was Harry Payne Whitneys Regret which in 1915 gal ¬ loped home an easy winner ahead of fifteen other starters running the mile and a quarter in 205 In the first Kentucky Derby run in 1875 there were two fillies that tried to take the measure of the colts J A Grinsteada Gold Mine and William Cottrills Ascension and neither of them finished in the money All down through the years other good fillies have essayed this difficult task in vain in ¬ cluding Gowell which afterwards won the Latonia Derby and Cleopatra winner of the Latonia Championship Last year however the fillies in the twoyearold division were so good and showed so much quality beating many of the best colts that they must be given special consideration considerationThe The star of the twoyearold division was Willis Sharpe Kilmers Sallys Alley which won five races and 94847 There was no fluke about this fillys victories She won them on all kinds of tracks and against the best of both sexes Her maiden race was won at Belmont on June S four and a half furlongs in 52 Her next win was the Clover Slakes at Aqueduct on June 21 when she galloped fiveeighths in 59 in the mud On September 11 she won a race at Belmont Park running the fiveeighths straightaway in 56 = 5 On September 16 she carried 116 pounds in the Belmont Futurity and beat a band of twentytwo other horses running the threequarters in 111 and winning by three lengths This race showed that she had not only speed but stamina and fairly en ¬ titled her to the twoyearold crown Later in the fall she was sent to Maryland and won the second division of the Pimlico Futurity beating Martingale Rialto and other high class colts and carrying 116 pounds running a mile in 1 39V Mr Kilmer won the Ken ¬ tucky Derby with Exterminator and if he can repeat with Sallys Alley it will add to his laurels as a turfman turfmanBRADLEY BRADLEY HOLDS STRONG HAND HANDE E IL Bradley will have all his good three yearolds in the Derby including the fillies Blossom Time and Betty Beall Both of these are by the stallion North Star III and their racing as twoyearolds entitle them to rank with the best of the misses Blos ¬ som Time may prove the best of the fillies this year and she need not improve much over her twoyearold form to give her high rank She came to thp races late in th2 summer winning a maiden race at Saratoga on August IS and a purse at Belmont on September 6 This was in preparation for the Belmont Futurity in which she carried 116 pounds While Blossom Time did not finish in the money she raced close with with her opponents throughout and finished fast and gamely Her best race was her victory in the Pimlico Futurity She won the first division at odds of 27 to 1 carrying 119 pounds and running a mile in 1 39 Her stable companion Betty Bcall must not be overlooked for her race at Latonia in the Fort Thomas Handicap when she ran three quarters in 1134 was an excellent per ¬ formance formanceGUI GUI OUI A SMASHER SMASHERThe The Montfort Jones stable has in Oui Oui one of the best filly prospects that has been seen on the turf in many years She is by Sir John Johnson from the Ogden mare Parisienne and is bred to go far and fast She won her maiden race last spring at Churchill Downs and won another purse at the Downs in September In October she won a race in the mud at Latonia running threequarters in good time She won the Queen City Handicap on October 15 carrying 109 pounds and running the mile in 1 40 Being a slow beginner she lingered at the start but soon was up with her rivals and raced pant them standing a hard drive and beating Prince K and In Memoriam Donges Alice Blue Gown and Rialto also finished behind her Kay Spence took Oui Oui to Pimlico where on November 4 she won the 10000 added Walden Handicap beating General Thatcher and other good ones Al ¬ though slow to get started and carried wide in the stretch she ran the mile in l 40 She wound up her victories of the year by winning the Endurance Handicap at Bowie carrying 110 pounds and ran one mile on a dead track in 1 43 J Cal Milam has in Dust Flower and Anna M Humphrey two fillies that last year looked as if they would sweep the twoyearold platter clean but after winning two races each they were retired for the year These are both by Peter Quince and while Mr Milam was sorely disappointed that they did not make a better showing last year he will start one of them in the Derby and reserve the other for the Oaks in the hope they will redeem their early promise promiseALICE ALICE BLUE GOWNS QUALITY QUALITYKecne Kecne Brothers have an excellent colt prospect in Chittagong but if he does not come up to expectations they may depend on Alice Blue Gown a Luke MeLuke Carene tilly which should have won more races but for her tendency to run out in the stretch In her later races however in the Fall she ran straight and true and found no difficulty in beating In Memoriam and some of the best of the colts Although somewhat undersized she has filled out won ¬ derfully and will come to the races in the spring in fine fettle fettleBest Best Love one of John E Maddens fillies by Ogden Maud B L won six races last year and 5395 She beat that good colt Little Celt in the handicap at Empire and was third to Cyclops and Shamrock in the Hartsdale Stakes at the same track Her best race was threequarters in 112 at Jamaica with 120 pounds She has wintered well and if her early trials are satisfactory she will be a starter in the Derby DerbyLady Lady Boss by Manager Waite made an excellent showing on the Canadian tracks and in her rather strenuous campaigns won nine races and 911G She will be entered in the Derby and her stable connections be ¬ lieve that she has quality enough to warrant her facing the flag on May 19 1 Many other fillies will likely be on the Derby list among them Lady Myra Ethel Clayton Miss Star Lady Inez Miss Cerina and Bessie Leightoa
