JAMAICAS FIXTURES Metropolitan Jockey Club Pre ¬ pares Stake Program Excelsior Paumonok Youthful Youthfuland and Fifteen Other Events to toClose Close for Entries March 1 NEW YORK N Tt February 3 Particu ¬ lar interest to admirers of the thoroughbred is carried by the announcement of the stake program for the spring meeting of the Metro ¬ politan Jockey Club which will be in the hands of tiie owners and trainers of the country tomorrow It is at this cozy and commodious plant that the Jockey Club season of sport is in ¬ augurated each year The hearts pf those who find in the tests of racing an exhilarat ¬ ing pastime beat faster when the flags snap in the breeze on the grandstand and club ¬ house at Jamaica bidding welcome to all and ushering in another period of sport in which the horse of blood plays a star part partBecause Because of its place on the racing schedule Jamaica holds unusual interest for the ex ¬ perts of the turf as the Excelsior Paumonok and other handicaps bring to the post the best of the older horses at weights whose adjustment is measured by their worth the previous year In these days when many individuals devoted to the turf are handi cappers with a system of their own a com ¬ parison with Mr Vosburghs figures is part of the enjoyment found in the sport sportThen Then too such events as the Youthful Colorado and Rosedale Stakes afford a first time glimpse of the twoyearolds with whose trials the press has kept the public ac ¬ quainted Students of breeding arc eager to fee what families are furnishing the winners and there is always the fascination of find ¬ ing an outstanding performer like Sallys Alley the heroine of 1922 or the sensational filly Reclare away back in the early nineties coming from an unexpected source When the owner of the phenomenal twoyearold is the property of a novice on the turf and a poor man to toot as was in the case of Henry Warnke the Gravesend flagman inj whose colors Reclare ran the romantic qual ity of the turf is accentuated a hundredfold Til REEYEAROLD FEATURES FEATURESThat That the threeyearold features have their mission is also understood The laggard twoyearolds frequently come into their own at three There is no period where so much improvement is shown in the thoroughbred as between the ages of two and three Those who fancied a backward juvenile whose breeding and conformation was right will watch for a verification of their judgment while there will always be an interest in noting whether the best of the twoyearolds of the previous year train on to fulfill their mission in improving the breed which is the Alpha and Omega of racing racingThe The stakes which racing secretary Walter C Edwards announces for the meeting in May are eighteen in number Of these eight are for threeyearolds and over The Ex cellsior Handicap of a value of 7500 at one mile and a sixteenth is the chief of these It has always brought a good field to the post and it is to be hoped that the owners of good threeyearolds will see that their best are named for this event the supply of handicap horses at the close of 1922 being lamentably short That the Paumonok at threequarters mile will fill acceptably is taken for granted Named for a popular social club this race has attracted the cream of the sprinting division from year to year yearOther Other features for threeyearolds and over are the Kings County and Long Beach each with an added value of 53500 and run over the mile and a sixteenth route the Rainbow 2500 added at threequarters mile the Garden City Selling 2000 added at one mile and a sixteenth and the Newtown and Olympic both selling at threequarters mile with added values of 2000 each eachCHIEF CHIEF OF JUVENILE STAKES STAKESAs As in former years the Youthful of the guaranteed value of 7000 at five and one half furlongs is the chief juvenile offering The Colorado value of 5COOO to be run over the fiveeighths distance is also a prize of solid proportions The same is true of the Roscdalc value of 5000 which is also at fiveeighths but is exclusively for fillies a wise provision on the part of the manage ¬ ment as it is a substantial reward early in the year fcr the fortunate owner of the win ¬ ner as few fillies are capable of conquering the best of the colts coltsOther Other prizes for twoyearolds are the Greenfield Selling 2000 added at five and a half furlongs the Montauk Selling 200V added over the same route and the Suffolk Selling 2000 added at fiveeighths mile mileExclusively Exclusively for threeyearolds are several good races chief among them Is the Stuyve sant Handicap value 6000 at a mil It Continued oa twelfth pace JAMAICAS FIXTURES Continued from first page was in this event that Man o War gave New Yorkers a first taste of his quality as a threeyearold in 1920 It is the best sort of preparation for the Withers Belmont and Dwyer as well as other features of the early spring and it should attract every good three yearold in training The Spring Handicap value 5000 is a dash of threequarters mile while the South Hampton with an added value of 3r 00 is a test of a mile and a six ¬ teenth The fourth event for threeyear olds exclusively is the Highland 2000 added It is a selling affair at threequarters mile It would be difficult to frame a program with more appeal than that which Mr Ed ¬ wards presents It is well balanced and gives trainers a chance to rriake both stake horses and platers pay their way President Street and he may well anticipate a liberal response on Thursday March 1 the date on which the entries close
