POOLS BRILLIANT RIDING Adds Tone to Fridays Program at the Tijuana Track Pilots Lewis B Don Jose anl Iouanna to toImpressive Impressive Victories 2fosc Finishes FinishesEnliven Enliven the Sport SAX DIEGO Gal February 3 There are jockeys and jockeys There is as much dif ¬ ference in riders as there is between the Sahara Desert and Pikes Peak For instance there was jockey W Pool at Tijuana Friday afternoon He all but had a field day A finished reinsman is this youthful knight of the saddle How he finished is best told by the results resultsHe He rode to victory Lewis Bf Don Jose and Louanna and in these triumphs he was a king on a throne Pool yesterday afternoon not only rode winners l ut he displayed the technique the polish and finish which were the tools of the Sloans Garrisons and the Tarals in their prime primeIt It had been expected that Pool would ride his fourth winner of the aftrenoon when the seventh race at threequarters arrived Here he was astride the favorite Count Boris but this expert horseman could not have made this one win for he suffered a disastrous mishap of the race course Count Boris Bled BledPools Pools first triumph was on the Blackwell Crippen horse Lewis B in the third which was at one mile and seventy yards In this race he had the horse away to good advantage and kept him in front and at the same time conserved his energy Just within hailing distance of the finish Cabin Creek loomed up as a possible winner For the first time in the contest Pool used whip and a few well directed lashes applied to his mount gave him the victory It was a welltimed move moveIn In the fifth at threequarters he had the leg up on Don Jose Now it has been men ¬ tioned that Don Jose was not partial to such a tough track Friday afternoon he ran kindly for Pool and after he had shaken off Fickle Fancy and Southern Gentleman Pool gave an ear to his task and rods Don Jose to a splendid victory victoryHis His third set of brackets was earned in the afternoons feature at one mile and seventy j yards This handicap saw him on the Shafer I j Conway mare Louanna and again did he have his mount cover the opponents with mud and defeat defeatIn In this race he was forced to show his greatest skill for his mount was tiring fast and had stumbled twenty yards from the end However Pool picked the mares head up and riding his hardest managed to keep her going long enough to score by a nose from Frank Fogarty who in turn was six lengths better than Whippet The latter caused quite a bit of excitement while at the barrier Ho is a rogue with his heels and both Louanna and Wild Flower felt the weight of them No doubt the latter suffered from his onslaught for after showing much early speed she quit to a walk Continued on twelfth pace POOLS BRILLIANT RIDING Continued from first page j Three nose finishes enlivened the sport which is quite unusual considering the try ¬ ing course that the thoroughbreds had to race over These tight fits came in the third fourth and sixth races which were won by Lewis U Vera Rita and Louanna in the order named namedAmong Among the distinguished visitors were Ed ¬ ward Peterson member of the Nebraska State Racing Commission He motored across the continent with J P Shirley and Ralph Dutcher prominent Omahans They plan to spend a brief visit here and then resume their travel by automobile back to Omaha OmahaJockey Jockey A Claver reported at the track completely recovered from his slight attack of pneumonia and stated that he expects to resume his saddle work as soon as the weather moderates
