Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of February 4 1903 Racing at New Orleans Newport and Oak ¬ land landJockeys Jockeys Mountain and Walker each rode two winners today at the Newport track E S Gardner proprietor of the Avondalc Farm Sumner County Tenn has engaged training quarters in Cumberland Park for his entire string Gardner has ten twoyearolds and two threeyearolds all engaged in the stakes at Nashville Jockey Odom rode Kilogram to victory for th3 Waterbury Dick stable in the first race at New Orleans today The track was heavy and Kilogram is noted for bis ability to run in the mud The talent installed bun as the favorite and he justified the confidence placed in him by making ever post a winning one oneE E Trotter owner of the big sprinter Scorpio and other race horses met with a painful and serious accident at New Orleans He was looking over the threeyearold Captain Hugh Bradley in front of his stable The colt which was feeling good reared up in the air and on coming down one of his hoofs caught Mr Trotter squarely on the right side of his face Hb cheek was laid open and frightfully lacerated It swelled up so badly that the extent of the injury could not be determined and it was thought that his jaw was broken The attending physician however gave it as his opinion after the swelling had subsided that the jaw was not broken and that unless blood poisoning should develop the unfortu ¬ nate horseman would get along all right though it is not likely that he will escape without a scar as a reminder of his narrow escape from a broken jaw or something wone I Brigadier which hung up a mile record at Shcepshead Bay two years ago and which drifted West last year is having a variegated career A short time ago he was on the hos Ipital list and in such a bad way that in order to relieve him of his misery it was decided to shoot him Just when all hope of saving him had been given up he began to mend and now is in such good condition that it has been decided to ship him East and prepare him for a campaign on the New York tracks Brigadier is by Rayon dOr St Bridget and was bred by August Belmont As a twoyear old and a threeyearold he gave evidence of possessing the highest class but in the spring of his fouryearold career he suffered from an affection of the lungs which left its mark in the shape of unpaired wind He had hung up a record but his days of usefulness in the Belmont stable were over and he was sold to H C Schuh who brought him West and won a small fortune with him Brigadier it is said now is as good as he ever was at his best and when at his best he was a stake horse
