Here and There on the Turf Three Year Old Prospects Picking the Best a Doubt ¬ ful Task TaskPlentiful Plentiful Contention As ¬ sured Looking over the threeyearold possibilities for 1923 it is found that on the basis of two yearold racing there are between forty and fifty that have real pretensions to the stake racing class There are undoubtedly others that were not brought to the races until late in the year or not at all that will add to this list considerably but it is also prob ¬ able that some of the now seeming possibili ¬ ties may fail utterly as threeyearolds Seldom has there been a racing season ex ¬ actly like that of 1922 Early in the spring the coughing epidemic was so widespread and was so prevalent among the twoyearolds that many did not have a real chance Some of them were raced before they should have been after having gone through the sickness while others that were laid away until entirely re ¬ covered found their chances for racing to greatness gone goneFor For that reason the index obtained through twoyearold performances does not have its usual value and there is more of an uncer ¬ tainty about the threeyearolds than is usual Undoubtedly there are many of Derby caliber but it is hard to pick out more than a dozen that have by their races shown that they be ¬ long to that class classIn In point of money earned Willis Sharpe Kilmers Sallys Alley stands at the top This one winner that Allumeur sent to the post earned 594847 and was second only to the threeyearold Pillory By her victories over both colts and fillies in both the Futurity at Belmont Park and the Pimlico Futurity she took the measure of the best that could ba mustered against her in each race but she will have to prove herself against both the colts and the fillies again this year for there were some truly good ones that she did not meet meetRialto Rialto the son of Chicle that raced for Harry Payne Whitney did not show much in matter of money earned but he is right up among the best of the threeyearold prospects prospectsRichard Richard T Wilsons homebred Wilderness a son of the Futurity winner Campfire is rated by many as one of the most promising of the new threeyearolds though there were several that earned a greater amount of money Then he has a stable companion in Tall Timber another son of Campfire that belongs right up in the top rank of the age ageAugust August Belmonts Messenger does not rank high among the money winners but all who eaw him race at Saratoga when he won the Grab Bag Handicap are willing to give him a front place among the best threeyearolds It is only a question of his coming back in the opinion of many to have him showing the way to most if not all of the threeyear olds oldsGoshawk Goshawk the best Whisk Broom H two yearold of last year and a colt that was sold to Gifford A Cochran for a big price must always be considered among the brightest of the threeyearold prospects Enchant ¬ ment although barred from many of the best threeyearold stake races by reason of being a gelding is a threeyearold of high class and may be better than any of the colts es ¬ pecially as a stayer He is another son of Chicle like Rialto A third by this sire that has every chance to be in the first flight of threeyearolds is Cherry Pie property of the i Greentree Stable This one like Enchant j ment is a gelding and accordingly has limited opportunities but Scott Harlan intends point ¬ ing him for the Kentucky Derby DerbyIt It was kite in the year when Little Celt came to hand last year but he is unquestion ¬ ably one that cannot be overlooked in dis ¬ cussing threeyearold possibilities He is a colt of electric speed and sure to make good Dunlin is another that has every right to try for the best of the threeyearold offerings on his performances of last year One of his best races was bis victory in the Hopeful Stakes at Saratoga SaratogaJ J S Wards Donges had speed plenty and ability to carry high weight as a twoyear old and he surely belongs in the roster of prospective threeyearold champions championsGreat Great Man son of Great Britain is prob ¬ ably a better colt than his winnings of last year would indicate He was on the shelf i considerable tune but showed flashes of greatness greatnessMcKee McKee the colt that Charles A Stoneham paid John E Madden a good price for is an ¬ other one that belongs A J Goldsborough has reported that he has grown into a mag ¬ nificent threeyearold and that he will send him after the best of them this year yearBud Bud Lerner and Zev both in the Rancocas Stable must find a place on the list of pos ¬ sibilities with chances on form second to few and others that appear to belong are Hope ¬ less New Hampshire Cherokee Bo McMillan Bluemont and Lathrop LathropOf Of the fillies Sallys Alley has already been mentioned but there are others that belong Edward R Bradleys Blossom Time is surely of Oaks class and Montfort Jones Oui Oui proved herself adequately last year Edict winner of the Spinaway Stakes is strictly a highclass filly and Cresta a daughter of Whisk Broom H is fast enough to take a high place How Fair Anna M Humphrey Miss Star Dust Flower and Suweep are among other possibilities possibilitiesMartingales Martingales chief claim to greatness is his ability to race well through muddy going Cyclops may be no better than a good class sprinter Osprey William Tell and Moon raker probably do not measure up to the real Derby standard standardAltogether Altogether the prospect for plenty of con ¬ tention in the big threeyearold races appear to be decidedly bright for 1923
