Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of March 10 1903 Racing at New Orleans and Oakland Jockey Powell rode Forest King and Action to victory in the last two races on the card at Oakland Once more Fuller carried off the riding hon ¬ ors at the Fair Grounds This star jockey piloted three winners Handspinner in the first race The Way in the second and Tom Collins in the fifth race McChesney had his first experience in the nature of work at the Montgomery Park track Without a skip or break the great fouryear old was sent on a long journey which was finished up with a halfmile gallop negotiated in 54 seconds The colt accomplished his work like it was nothing more than a romp and from the manner in which ha did it some doubts about his disliking the makeup of the track were dispelled in the minds of the train ¬ ers who witnessed it Topsoil S C Hildreths American Derby candidate worked a mile in 151 and pulled up without any signs of dis Mocorito took Nigrette Deutschland and iShellmount into camp when she defeated them in the six and a half furlong dash which was scheduled as the main feature of the after ¬ noon at Oakland It was a tossup which of the first three was the winner until the judges had separated them and the winning numbers were displayed It was then seen that they had placed Mocorito first Deutschland sec ¬ ond and Nigrette third Shellmount never figured seriously in the race being badly out ¬ run from the start Deutschland set the pace from the rise of the barrier with Mocorito and Nigrette well up When the head of the stretch was reached Nigrette and Mocorito gained on Deutschland and a contest of speed and stamina began The early pace told on Deutschland however and Mocorito managed to catch the judges eye at the finish Deutschland just managed to outstay Nigrette for second money moneyEfforts Efforts are being made by influential horse ¬ men in the West to if possible secure the reinstatement of S C Hildreth by the Jockey Club These efforts will be made along the lines of a letter of application signed by a prominent western horseman There has been not a little talk all winter that Hildreth might be reinstated but Hildreth himself when asked about the matter said he did not know what the eastern turf authorities would do but of course he would be pleased to race again in the East if the Jockey Club would reinstate him In the last two years in the West Hil ¬ dreth has taken rank among the two or three threemost HeI most successful turfmen in this section He Hehas has been the recipient of a good deal of ad ¬ verse criticism That be is a good horseman as well as a good trainer no one will deny Speaking recently of the stories about his hav ¬ ing been broke at Chicago last year he said I wasnt quite as badly broke as they thought I was I loaned J W Schorr 30000 at G per cent interest Mr Schorr of course is a wealthy man but he was engaged in a busi ¬ ness enterprise in St Louis and ntcded im ¬ mediate cash
