Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of March 21 1903 Racing at Oakland and New Orleans Two hundred new stalls and a field stand will be built on the Saratoga track before the meeting in August Jockey Munro outshone both Fuller and Gannon at the Fair Grounds when he piloted three winners Gannon rode one winner but Fuller failed to land one of his mounts home George Odom will ride Father Bill Dalys Himself in the Bcnuing Spring Handicap oil the opening day of the meeting His next im ¬ portant engagement to date is to ride McChes ney in the Montgomery Handicap HandicapCaptain Captain S S Brown has shipped to Louis ¬ ville the Brighton Derby winner Hyphen to be prepared for his eastern engagements by R Tucker at Churchill Downs Along with Hyphen went Scioto a sister to the famous mare Imp and a half dozen promising two yearolds Scioto is a candidate for a number of the big threeyearold stakes this year yearJohn John Hatchmeister secretary of the St Louis track spent last week in visiting training grounds soliciting entries for the great Worlds Fair Derby of 50000 to be run in June 1904 He says that he has met with good success and has secured quite a number of entries He is also booking entries for the 1901 and 1905 Derbys Oakland ako had a fourmile race the Thornton Stakes with 2500 added money and Artilla Lcaroyd Star Cotton and El Rio Shannon were sent away on an even start Lcaroyd and Star Cotton set out to run each other into the ground their jockeys evidently forgetting that it was a fourmile race and not a sprint of fiveeighths Jockey Knight on El Rio Shannon displayed good judgment of pace when in the first mile he rated his mount about an eighth of a mile behind the others After racing three miles Learoyd and Star Cotton were done and El Rio Shannon quickly closed the eighth gap caught and passed ths other three and came home by him ¬ self Artilla followed Star Cotton and Lea ¬ royd throughout and was not in condition for such a long race but passed the tired Star Cotton in the stretch to take the small end of the stake A Simons who trains his own horses sent a mighty fit longdistance runner to the post today in the New Louisiana Stakes at four miles and his training methods evoked many compliments from horsemen at the Fair Grounds today The New Louisiana Stakes had an added value of 2000 and brought only four horses to the post The start was good and Latson set the pace for the first mile of the long journey with the others close up After passing the mile post Fuller on The Way moved up and took command where he rated his mount at a twominute clip This order was maintained until the horses reached the three and a half mile post where Gannon on Major Mansir challenged The Way which readily gave way and Major Mansir was home first with two lengths to spare Accolade got third money because Latson quit almost to a walk after going two miles
