Here and There Thereon on the Turf Measure for an Illinois Rac ¬ ing Law LawSome Some High Class Horses in Bowie Inaugural InauguralWeather Weather Unfavorable for Kentucky Derby Training TrainingBook Book for Huntingdon Spring Meeting Elsewhere in this issue of Daily Racing Form is printed the bill for the promotion and pro ¬ tection of racing in the State of Illinois which has been prepared by the Chicago Washington Park Club for presentation to the Illinois legis ¬ lature It is a carefully prepared measure to every provision of which much thought was given There is nothing haphazard about it Every paragraph and its effect if enacted into law was given weighty consideration Doubt ¬ less acute minds in the lawmaking branch of the stats government will find provisions to object to Fortunately making proper amend ¬ ments in such cases is easy and can safely be entrusted to the wisdom of our lawmakers It would be a good thing if every lover of the thoroughbred trotter or pacer in the State of Illinois could have a chance to consider the provisions of this elaborately thought out measure and convey his impressions as to the desirability of making it a law to his senator and representative in the legislature Happily they can easily find this proposal for a good racing law advantageous to their favorite brand of racing and one all hands interested in can unite in helping on its road to enactment With the announcement of the nominations for the Inaugural Handicap at Bowie to be run Monday a good line is had on the class of the fast horses that will usher in the new season of racing in Maryland The list is headed by the fouryearold Rockminister the highclass wrecker of reputations of last year It was Rocluninistcr that administered the first and only defeat to Whiskaway last year in the running of the Huron Handicap at Saratoga This same Rockminister also was the victor over Lucky Hour and Bunting in the Latonia Championship Stakes at a mils and threequarters in October In this last named race Rockminister hung out a new American record of 255 35 for the distance under scale weight weightFair Fair Phantom and High Cloud are also named by Montfort Jones who is to race this year under the name of the Audley Farm Stable Others of note in the Inaugural are Tippity Witchct a Bowie favorite Broom stcr Opperman Fair Gain Vennie Setting Sun and several others of undoubted good class Altogether the Inaugural Handicap promises to furnish the most interesting opening day race ever staged in the spring at Bowie The unseasonably cold weather is something of a setback for the horses that are preparing for the Kentucky Derby but the trainers agree that it is belter to have such weather now than later on in the preparations of their candidates Few of the horses that are being pointed for the big race have progressed far enough at this time to make an interruption in their training of any moment but after real hard work is well under way an interruption is well nigh fatal fatalIt It is reasonable to expect that winter will lose its sting at the end of the present cold snap and that it will be possible at the vari ¬ ous training grounds to make up for lost time rapidly rapidlyThe The program of the first six days of the West Virginia Jockey Club meeting at Hunt ington has been issued It is set forth in the book that the rules of the Kentucky Racing Commission will govern except where spe ¬ cial rules for the meeting intervene interveneThe The book also announces the West Virginia Derby which will be at a mile and an eighth with 2000 added The TriState Handicap at threequarters has a like value and while the Derby is to be run April 21 the handicap is the closing day feature This meeting is advertised to begin April 12 and continue until April 28 The track is a mile ellipse and the promise is that no race will have a lesser value than 500 with six or more races each day This smaller circuit is constantly grow ¬ ing and the advent of the West Virginia Jockey Club into racing gives promise of the attain ¬ ment of real importance Most of the tracks in this smaller circuit are halfmile tracks but the West Virginia course is a full mile This is a decided advantage and it is assured that racing will be carried on at the new ground in a manner that will rapidly give it prominence
