FUTURITY FOR TANFORAN Plans Under Way for Establish ¬ ment of Race Patterned After Belmont Park Contest SAN FRANCISCO Cal March 29 Robert P Lcighton racing manager of the PaciGc Coast Jockey Club will leavo Saturday March 31 for his home in Vancouver B C He will return in the fall to make prepara ¬ tions for the opening of the sport at Tan foran Saturday November 3 3The The popular racing official is much en ¬ couraged by the prospects for the revival of the great outdoor pastime in the San Francisco Bay region and as time goes on plans to put on features that will make it even stronger in its hold on the public than at present presentIt It will not be long before an announce ¬ ment will be made of Futurity Stakes for Tanforan None will be run at the first meet ¬ ing by reason of the limited time before the inaugural The racing manager is of the opinion that a Futurity should be all that the name implies with the colts and fillies being nominated if possible prior to foaling On account of the exigencies of the situation here however it is likely the first Futurity at the peninsula course will be for foals of 1922 as it is planned to have a Futurity next year yearJust Just as soon as possible a race along the lines of the Futurity at Belmont Park with the marcs being named will be announced to be run at a meeting at Tanforan The distance will be seveneighths mile as at the New York track or a mile as at Pim lico licoAlthough Although both spring and fall meetings are scheduled for Tanforan the Futurity un ¬ doubtedly will be run in the fall in order to have a distance that will really settle the question of supremacy among the young ¬ sters stersThe The first meeting at Tanforan is princi ¬ pally in the nature of trying out the taste of the public It will be run rather as a spectacle something similar to automobile races and football matches Once the people get in the habit of turning out to watch their favorite horses dash around the turns meas ¬ ures will be taken for rewards for the breeders First of all patronage is the aim as it is useless to attempt sport on a large scale without a good gate gateRacing Racing manager Leighton favors part of the stakes in all feature events going to the breeders of the first three or four horses and such action would be certain to arouse the interest of the farmers of the state who often are fired with ambition to breed good horses but have little desire to own racing stables The sport must win the support of the agricultural interests to be of any per ¬ manence manenceRaces Races for thoroughbreds bred on the Pa ¬ cific Coast may be put on now and then at Tanforan In the event such contests are found to be unpopular allowances for home breds in open races have been suggested by the racing manager
