Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of March 30 1903 Racing at Washington Oakland and Mem ¬ phis phisAt At the present tima the weather at Wash ¬ ington is very unsettled The track has been in anything but good condition having been fast but two days of the seven raced so far Today it rained and as a result the course was a sea of mud and those racers that on a fast track seldom win were in the limelight Mrs Frank Foster is a filly that revels in muddy going and today marked her third victory of the meeting every win being achieved on a heavy or a muddy track She accounted for the fourth race on the card today her mar ¬ gin of victory at the finish being eight lengths It was only a canter for her the other three starters never menacing her Redfern rode Mrs Frank Foster this making his second win for the day he having ridden Graziallo a twoyearold starting for the first time to victory in the proceeding race W C Daly also accounted for a purse when his fiveyear old gelding Daly managed to last long enough to beat Examiner and Yellow Tail across the finish line in the fifth race raceOrdnung Ordnung and Bullman These two names were impressed on the memory of those who attended the opening day at Memphis at ¬ tracted by the running of the Montgomery Handicap The weather was clear and the track was fast What more fitting setting could be desired for a great handiccap and the star band of horses contesting for its big stake The idol of the hour went down to defeat but not because he did not have the necessary speed to carry off the honors and the monc McChesney favorite and carrying the high weight was practically eliminated at the start He was crowded into the fence and sent to his knees at the first turn destroying any chance he may have had to win the rich prize When starter Fitz Gerald called the horses to the post for the big race four ¬ teen of the best handicap horses in training at this time paraded to the starting line with Harry New the C R Ellison hope honored with position number one They were at the post four minutes before starter Fitz Gerald caught them in line and sent them off on their mile and a sixteenth journey Ordnung was away with the leaders and before they had gone ten yards he had taken command There was a jam at the first turn with Mc ¬ Chesney and Witfull the chief sufferers Mc ¬ Chesney being sent to his knees as related Although Witfull lost much ground she gamely set out to catch the leaders Ordnung held sway throughout the entire race escaping all the interference that ths others encountered being pressed first by Harry New which raced with him to the threequarter post where he fell back to third position and Waswift took up the chase At the turn into the stretch jockey Hoar again called on Harry New which responded with a rush that carried him past Waswift in the last fifty yards and within a neck of victory at the finish Witfull had gradually improved her position and in the stretch Fuller riding like a demon urged her on and game littls thoroughbred that she is she caught Waswift and passed her but the distance was too short and she had to be con ¬ tent with third money She was going fastest of all at the finish Without discrediting the winner which ran a true and game race what the result would have been had not the two most dangerous contenders been interfered with and eliminated at the start is a question But the honors belong to the victor and Ord ¬ nung was the victor Flocarline Huzzah Wax Taper and Major Tenny ran good races
