HISKAWAY LOOKS SOUND Experts Certain He Will Stand StandTraining Training United Verde Is IsReady Ready for Campaign LOUISVILLE Ky March 20 Expert turf ¬ men and veterinarians who have had a close eye on AVhiskaway all winter are of the unanimous opinion that the great son of Whisk Broom IT will stand training The conqueror of Morvich looks as good as any thoroughbred could look and while trainer Uarnes is going along slowly with him he has never shown any sign of lameness from the leg which bothered him to retirement before the close of last year While it is still a bit enlarged it seems to have no fever and the horse docs not favor it in the least Neither does Whiskaway show the sourness he developed soon after he was purchased by C W Clark and turned over to trainer Barnes during the racing at Saratoga last August Since Whiskaway had the firing irons applied soon after he arrived at Churchill Downs last fall and given a long rest he takes his long gallops with zest He has a habit however of pricking back his ears and scowling at one which reminds a person familiar witli the uncontrollable temper of his brother Flags that Whiskaway comes from the same parentage What Whisk ¬ away will do when he is really called on is a problem His heredity does not speak volumes for his future action if he is to take after his brother Flags for the latter was as surly a racer as ever faced the barrier barrierUnited United Verde in the same stable with Whiskaway also looks as if he will race although he was well used up toward the tailend of last year He was a bit dicky legged as well as frayed due to his long training This probably is one of the best secondrate racers America has seen in years especially in soft going He has been a con ¬ sistent winner for the copper kings stable since he won the Bashford Manor Stakes at Churchill Downs as a twoyearold in the mud back in 1920 United Verde comes from sturdy stock though being by Golden Maxim Continued on eighth I ige WHISKAWAY LOOKS SOUND Continued from first page from Yankee Tree United Verdes mother just died last fall and his sire Golden laxim is twentythree years old but still virile He is still doing service at Tom Murphys farm a few miles from Louisville Being a brother to Jim Gaffney his chances in the stud have not been as good as that much sought for stock horse as the class of matrons he serves was not so highly catalogued cataloguedPeter Peter Coyne who conducts a public train ¬ ing stable at the Downs is training a brother to United Verde in King Gorin II This colt was just taken up last fall and before being turned into winter quarters showed quarters in around 25 He is the bestlooking twoyearold seen at the Downs in years barring being a bit pigeontoed That does not seem to injure his racing quali ¬ ties however for in company with Dobson a twoyearold by Pataud Bow Bells by Sir Dixon he turned in a quarter in the heavy going Sunday in 24 The Golden Maxim colt had his head in front of the Pataud colt at the finish and seemed to have him whipped whippedWilliam William Knebelkamp president of the Lou ¬ isville Baseball Club has a twoyearold being trained by II D Dick Williams at Douglas Park which has the grotesque rame of A Sap which he is willing to run against King Gorin IT in a match race at a quarter or threeeighths of a mile for 1000 a side A Sap is also a product of Tom Murphys breeding farm being by Boots and Saddle which has been coming on well in the way of making a reputation as a sre during the last two years A Sap is a fast colt no doubt else the proposition to match him would not have been forthcoming forthcomingHIDIOKETTE HIDIOKETTE IS SPEKDY SPEKDYStrange Strange to say the fastest twoyearold trainer Alex Gordon has developed up to date this year is the filly by Short Grass Junta by Burgomaster and instead of be ¬ longing to Bud Fisher she is Gordons own property This filly is known among the employes of the Fisher stable as the trial horse Her name is Humorette and never yet has Gordon found among the expensive youngsters of the stable any one that could trim Humorette doing anything from a quarter to a half mile Satire a colt by Omar Khayyam Chemulpo by Ben Strome is about the best of the colts in the Fisher stable that has shown to date al ¬ though Gordon says that the pride of the barns twoyearolds Comic Artist a black colt by Omar Khayyam Honey Bee a half brother to Cartoonist the stables Derby candidate will prove the best when real racing begins beginsHyperion Hyperion another of the Fisher Derby eli I gibles is going great guns although he is still a maiden He works right along with Cartoonist and other of the stable cracks and seemS to revel in any kind of going It is said that Hyperion was inclined to be somewhat of a savage us a twoyearold and for that reason never started Hyperion is a foreignbred colt being by Sunstar from Melriquc by Melton He is a brown and looks every inch a racer Mr Mutt and Little Jeff by Ballot and The Finn respect ¬ I ively are goodlooking youngsters and have a steady way of going Neither has ever shown anything sensational sensationalFirebrand Firebrand looks fit as a fiddle thanks to a thorough course of medication administered by trainer Al Kirby during the winter for chronic indigestion He could do no better than he is now and if no mishaps come will lie in condition to meet Americas best handicap horses in the Clark Handicap fea ¬ ture of the opening day at Churchill Downs Firebrand has always been affected with in ¬ digestion and is a poor shipper For that reason trainer Kirby will race the horse on home territory That Firebrand when not handicapped above 10 pounds can give any horse in tho country a race at a long dis ¬ tance is held by his admirers He is not a hardy horse and cannot stand the wear and tear of such a racer as Kxterminator This was tried when he was shipped to Canada last summer and trained off miserably miserablyTrainer Trainer Kirby is educating a tine band of twoyearolds for Jefferson Livingston by Colonel Vennie and 1 loyal II That Colonel Vennie will prove quite a credit to the stud is pointed out by his first crop of consistent winners Vennie and Jack Bauer Iloyal II is the sire cf Mr Livingstons only Derby eligible Donegal This was a fair colt last year and he has filled out wonderfully since then Mr Kirby is the owner of lied Arrow another Derby eligible This colt is by Ballot and is doing well He was a winner of a couple of races last year althouglu he started but a few times
