Here and There Thereon on the Turf Costly TwoYearOld Fail ¬ ures uresSome Some of Them May Still Make Good GoodMadden Madden s Varied Kentucky Derby Interests Even once in a while one hears of the high priced yearling that fails to make good but it is seldom that the cheap one that succeeds is exploited When this is gone into it is usually found that the bargains are more fre ¬ quent than would be expected expectedLast Last year J S Ward paid 2100 for Dongcs and he won 35573 He is also one of the favored eligibles to the Kentucky Derby Sandy McNaughton went to 58100 for Little Celt but he won 11515 last year and Sandy has high hopes of his winning the big race at Churchill Downs DownsBo Bo McMillan cost T J Pcndergast 5200 and his money won was 11090 and he is an ¬ other that is pointing for the Derby DerbyCyclops Cyclops only cost Robert L Gerry 4000 and if he never goes to the post again he was a rare bargain for he was the winner of 10567 Edict only cost Mr Sinclair 53200 and it enabled Sam Hildreth to start her in selling races for a time but she wound up the year a winner of 17982 17982Edward Edward F Whitney paid 3100 for Heel Taps and she won 12303 Victor Vivadou who races under the name of Riviera Stable bought Miss Star for 1000 and she won 510208 Then take the wonderfol record of Lady Boss G C Winfrey bought her for a paltry 400 and she earned 10810 10810These These are some of the yearling purchases that are well to keep in mind when tales are told of highpriced failures And there were many others that in a more modest way proved rarely good bargains One of these was Bes si3 Leighton a filly that was purchased for 000 by H Roseacher and she garnered 0108 Little Hope only cost J A Coburn 750 and she brought in 5582 in purse money moneyChester Chester Applegate purchased Dicks Daugh ¬ ter for 800 and she won 5852 5852E E Trueman paid 000 for Be Trueman and she has already earned 3470 Then there is Dot the filly that Jake Byer bought for 050 She was a winner of 3375 as a twoyearold and B3rer has thought highly enough of her this year to name her for the Iventucky Derby as well as the Preaknes1 Stakes and the different Oaks to which it was possible to name her herThis This list shows thirteen yearling purchases that were rare bargains and it is only a small part of the transactions of last year that were wonderfully successful Of course there were some notable disap ¬ pointments and to make the record complete they may be mentioned The most notable one was Timeless a yearling that cost C A Stoneham 14500 He has not yet earned back anj of that purchase money but only started once Walter J Salmon paid 0100 for Old Times and afterward sold him cheaply He is still a maiden maidenJ J L Holland gave 5500 for Rupee and he friilsd to earn any part of a purse as a two yearold yearoldHigh High Prince was a bad bargain for Mr Viva ¬ dou He cost 5000 without being able to finish inside the money But Miss Star was such a bargain that the failure of this colt is forgotten forgottenGeorge George D Widener bought Sweepstakes for 5000 and he has not contributed anything to the stable earnings earningsSamuel Samuel D Riddle gave 10000 for Ten Minutes and he has only earned 250 But it might be said of this colt that Gwyn Tomp kins still has high hopes for him and he is being pointed for the Prcakness Stakes Still another 10000 yearling that failed as a twoycarcld was Hell Gate bought by Joseph E Widener His contribution to tli2 stable last year was only 907 Of course IhEre still is time for these to make good as threeyearolds and a majority of them had a good excuse for failures last year Many of them have been named for both the Preakness Stakes and the Kentucky Dzrby as well as other threeyearold stake races While on the subject of purchases a study of the entries for the Kentucky Derby will reveal that John E Madden will have a big interest in its decision that is not confined to his own entries As a breeder he will have a rooting interest in several of the other starters startersThere There are six that have been named by Mr Madden and of these the only winner is Sandy Hatch Pravus and Mac Lir arc both maidens that started while the other three Squander Flintstone and Dozer have never been to the As far as performance is concerned that would not make the Madden chances particu ¬ larly bright for the big race but he has a rare chance as a breeder breederIt It was Madden that sold Dunlin to J S Cosden for 37500 Harry F Sinclair paid him 37000 for Bud Lerner and both are prominently mentioned for the Kentucky Derby Then there are two other eligi ¬ bles from Mr Sinclairs Rancocas Stable that were purchased from Madden in Zev and Satel ¬ lite liteMadden Madden made many other notable sales last year one of them being McKee to C A Stone ham for 35000 but this last named one is not an eligible to the Derby DerbyThus Thus it will be seen that the Madden inter ¬ est at Churchill Downs on May 19 will be not altogether wrapped up in any starter that may race under his own colors
