Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of March 31 1903 Racing at Washington Memphis and Oak After the excitement attending the running of the Montgomery Handicap yesterday at Memphis todays racing seemed tame in com ¬ parison The outstanding feature of the aft ¬ ernoons program was the riding of Grover Cleveland Fuller of Chicago Three winners out of a total of five mounts that was his score for the afternoon afternoonRace Race King finally met defeat at Benning Peter Paul was the colt that took his measure and he beat Race King decisively by eight lengths The track was sticky and holding and giving eight pounds to the winner was more of a handicap than Race King could overcome W C Daly raked two purses into his coffers when Orloff and Hist won for him He also furnished the runnerup in the fifth race when his Carroll D was beaten by Star and Garter W 0 B Macdonoughs fast handicap horse Honiton won the six and a half furlong han ¬ dicap at Oakland from Epicure Princess Ti tauia Lady Kent and Tower of Candles He was in with the light impost of 95 pounds but even with this light weight he just man ¬ aged to nod his head in front of Epicure at the finish Honiton had a long lead when they turned for home but Epicure rapidly cut this lead down until at the finish it looked as though she had Hoaiton beaten Princess Titania evidently needs a rest for after racing right up with the leaders to the stretch she quit badly and was lucky in getting third money from Lady Kent
