ENGLISH JUMPING STABLE Major Frank White and W A Head to Race String of Over ¬ seas Steeplechasers SteeplechasersNEW NEW YORK X Y March 31 There re ¬ cently arrived in this country the first ship ¬ ment of English jumpers to compete in this years steeplechases These horses are to be raced by Major Frank White and William A Read Both these gentlemen are enthusiastic sportsmen and race horses in England both on the flat and across country countryMajor Major White is a brother of the late Lord Annaly who for many years was master of the Pytchley Hunt one of the famous packs in England Lord Annaly died just a week or so before Major White sailed for America in March MarchMr Mr Read who has business interests in this country and Mexico induced Major White to join him in bringing together a few English jumpers and cross the Atlantic with them as he believed this was one of the practical ways of encouraging tho sport in this country Mr Read who is returning to London on the Majestic Satur ¬ day hopes to be able to persuade Rundle Brendon another English breeder and racing man to bring over some horses also in time to compete in the steeplechases at Saratoga and the fall meetings in Maryland MarylandA A further shipment for Major White and Mr Read left England Wednesday and will join their horses at Belmont Park ParkThe The English contingent will probably race about twenty horses through the field during the 1923 season and if the result warrants this number will be increased next season seasonMr Mr Reads enterprise and good sportsman ¬ ship in bringing over English horses and English owners to race in our country should encourage American owners to support tho steeplechase racing here more strongly stronglyThe The racing associations are doing every ¬ thing to encourage jumping races by offer ¬ ing good stakes and no doubt these will be still further increased if capable fields of good horses are provided by owners ownersMr Mr Read ran his good horse Square lp in the Liverpool Grand National last year but the horse met with an accident early this season ajid could not race again Mr Read hopes to succeed next year as Square Up is one of the best jumpers in England EnglandMajor Major White will superintend the training of Mr Reads and his own horses and as he has successfully trained many good horses in South Africa and England he will probably take some of the seasons good prizes
