Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of April I 1903 Racing at Washington Oakland and Mem ¬ phis After checking up on todays racing at Ben ning it was found that W C Daly had not won a race The nearest he came to winning was in the third race when Anna Daly took third money His other starters all ran far back Jockey Redfern rode two winners Ex ¬ aminer and Turnpike both having good mar ¬ gins of victory at the finish finishMr Mr L V Bell saw Hermis Colonel Bill and Francesco work at Sheepshead Bay Trainer McCormick let the great trio down for three eighths in 39 seconds The move was one of the best yet made at Sheepshead Just be ¬ fore they finished their move Mr Bell armed with a kodak took a snapshot of them Mr Bell was accompanied by two friends who were interested spectators as the champions of the stable worked Mr Ball expressed satis ¬ faction at the progress made by his handicap division and stated that he was confident that Hermis would race up to expectations this year The party visited the Bell Stable after the horses were worked and inspected the rest of the string Major F A Daingcrfield manager of the Castleton Stud considers that the famous race horse Voter winner in J R F P Keenes colors of the Metropolitan Handicap and twentytwo other races and 29707 has made the most remarkable first season in the stud of any stallion he ever has seen Last season he mated Voter to fourteen mares Four of these have foaled and the others are due within the next three weeks What makes this fact all the more remarkable is that two of the mares bred to him are respectively 27 and 25 years old they being Ella T the dam of Tea Tray and Banquet and Belle of May wood the dam of Tenny and Olympian both of which just had foals by Voter The prod ¬ uce of these mares have won over 100000 on the turf and their foals by the famous son of Friars Balsam will be regarded as among the most valuable ever dropped in this noted place Major Daingerfield hopes to break a record with Voter in a breeding way and is confident of having this season at Castleton fourteen living foals by the great horse a representative of every mare bred to him in
