RICHEST KENTUCKY DERBY With Twenty Starters Will Be Worth Over 70000 Grand Trix lc Paris Only Foreign Slake to toSurpass Surpass It Churchill Downs Track AVidc AVidcEnough Enough for Thirty Starters LOUISVILLE Ky March 31 If as many as twenty go to the post for the Kenturky Derby this year which at this time seems probable the race will be worth approxi ¬ mately 71125 This is counting 145 entries at 25 each 3625 twenty starters at 500 each 10000 gold plate valued at 7500 and 50000 added by the Kentucky Jockey Club The winner would get 53025 in cash and the plate of 7500 making a total of 61 125 the horse finishing second would receive 6000 third 3000 and fourth 1000 1000The The story that the Derby would be split and run in two divisions has been waved aside with a gesture by general manager M J Winn Who ever heard of the Epsom Derby during its 143 runnings being split in two divisions on account oC an unusually large field of unwieldy numbers The Ken ¬ tucky Derby is one of Americas greatest turf events which has had a continuity of nearly fifty years yearsSince Since 1S75 the Derby has been run every year In its earlier years the stakes were never worth as much as 5000 on but one occasion and that was when the incomparable colored jockey Isaac Murphy rode Riley to victory for the veteran turfman Edward Corrigan First money that year was 5460 That was in 1S9D and not until Doncrail won in 1913 did the Derby ever net the winner as much as it did Riley Donerails portion was 5475 Since that time the Derby has increased in value until last year Morvichs share was 46775 in money and gold plate valued at 7000 7000LATOXIA LATOXIA CHAMPIONSHIP AGAIN AGAINThere There are two other races in America which rank with the Kentucky Derby in the amount of money going to the winner the Belmont and Preakness Stakes Last year manager Winn inaugurated the Championship Stakes at Latonia with an added value of 50000 and he contemplates a renewal of this stake again this year This reference is merely to stakes for threeyearolds There are sev ¬ eral rich stakes for twoyearolds which have a value approaching these threeyearold stakes including the Belmont and Pimlico Futuritys and the Hopeful Stakes at Sara ¬ toga togaThe The five English classics also rank with these American stakes in a money point of view and last year 1922 which was a peak one for money distribution the Ep ¬ som Derby netted Lord Woolavington 51 250 when his Captain Cuttle won the Two Thousand Guineas brought Lord Queensbor ough 52250 when St Louis won the One Thousand Guineas netted B W Parr 43100 when Silver Urn won the Epsom Oaks brought to the coffers of Lord Astor 33065 when Pogrom won and the oldest of all the English classics the St Leger enriched Lord Lonsdale 50800 when Royal Lancer won wonThe The Grand Prix de Paris for threeyear olds of all countries brought N E Ambatic olos the Greek turfman an equivalent of 101900 in francs when his Kefalin won The French Derby was worth 55S55 to the owner of Ramus RamusThe The Melbourne Cup for threeyearolds and over won last year by King Ingoda was worth 52740 W 120 FEET AVIDE AT START STARTAs As many as thirty or more horses can start in the Derby at Churchill Downs with ¬ out injuring the chances of any of them At the start the track is about 120 feet wide Then the field would get more than a quarter of a mile straight run before it would have to make a turn The track is eighty feet wide on the side of the stands and still wider on the opposite side whore the original grandstand stood This part of the track ia used altogether by trainers now on account of its width and safe footing for the younger racers Again there are not likely to be more than twenty starters although the Derby seems to be the most open one in years But the elimination process will soon start and the large entry list will then begin to thin out rapidly rapidlyRacing Racing for big stakes is like most every endeavor a survival of the fittest Trials of Derby candidates at Lexington and In Maryland before the Derby and the week preceding the Derby at Churchill Downs will develop the eligibles which really have a chance However enthusiastie Uere are but few turfmen who will pay 500 to start merely to see tiieir colors borne by a racer which has scant chance The showing of the Derby entries in the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico to bo decided a week before the big race will go far toward eliminating many of the eastern eligibles Of course the winner of the Preakness will more than probably come westward in an endeavor to add furtHer laurels and riches by winning tha Derby as there is no weight penalty at ¬ tached to the Derby conditions All colts carry 126 pounds lillies 121 pounds with eastern fixtures fixturesAs As geldings are barred from starting in the Preakness Stakes this would give the Whitney combination with two such cracks is Enchantment the present favorite and Cherry Pie an advantage should many of the wellconsidered eastern candidates show a lack of Derby class in the Preakness or other eastern fixtures fixturesThe The Kentucky Derby appeals more to the sentiment of a real turfman than its money value especially if he should happen to be a breeder of the thoroughbred or expects to become one It is therefore essential that the race should be won by either a colt or a filly which at the same time adds vastly to the value of such a winner after ita racing days are concluded
