BOWIES OPENING DAY Maryland Racing Season Begins Tomorrow Afternoon Clear and Warmer Weather Prom ¬ ised Inaugural Program Ap ¬ pears Particularly Inviting BOWIE Md March 31 With the an ¬ nouncement of the entries for the racing at Bowie Monday the Maryland racing season is at hand Today the weather is not ideal for the spring sport for there was a return to the winter chill but a rising thermometer is promised andf there is no threat of rain The entries for the first day of the meeting were just about all that could have been desired and the fact that no fewer than nine ¬ teen were named for the 5COO Inaugural Handicap is evidence enough of the good horses that are available Of these there wilt surely be a field at post time that will just about be the limit in size sizeThere There have been some delays in shipping by reason of car shortage but so many horses were already on hand that there is no lack of available material with which racing secretary Joseph McLennan can fill the pro ¬ grams This was forcibly shown in the sec ¬ ond race for which there were fortytwo entries making it necessary to exclude twen ¬ tytwo Fourteen in the twoyearold race are all those that will appear under silks for the first time and Benning will be strongly represented in this contest contestThere There are no lack of jockeys ready to take their part in the entertainment and tho vari ¬ ous officials are on hand clearing up the many preliminaries to the meeting Superin ¬ tendent Richard Pending has the track in belter condition than ever before and the manner in which the horses have been work ¬ ing over the course testifies to that fact factWith With a real weather sting in the air and Irop of more than twenty degrees in the temperature it was anything but a pleasant morning for the training at Bowie but most of the horses that will perform Monday were out and they were ready without any work that had been intended intendedHIGH HIGH CLOUD INJURED INJUREDKay Kay Spcnce had a bit of misfortune when High Cloud one of the fastest horses in training for the Audley Farm went rather badly amiss and he was not shipped here Lack of shipping facilities prevented Mr Jones string from reaching Bowie until to day but the horses are here now and Rock minister is looked upon as a sure starter in the Inaugural Monday This conqueror of Whiskaway Bunting and Lucky Hour hist year has come out of his winter retire ¬ ment a wonderful prospect and Spence pro ¬ nounces him ready readyGeneral General Thatcher a prominent Kentucky Derby candidate will make his appearance in tho Promenade Purse rather than in the Inaugural Handicap meeting horses of his own age and at five and a half furlongs instead of seveneighths of the principal con ¬ test of the opening day General Thatcher is one of tiie horses that will be stabled at I mini during the Bowie meeting and he will be shipped over on the days in which he is engaged There are several others of the Benning horses that will be handled in a like fashion fashionThe The twoyearolds are well represented and Marshall Cassidy has been busily engaged schooling them It is something of a task to educate now runners but Cassidy is the soul of patience and it is probable that his pupils will prove apt when racing time comes comesFIKST FIKST OF THE CUDGELS CUDGELSStar Star Cudgel the chestnut son of Cudgel and Olga Star named to start in the second nice Monday is the first of the get of Cud gfl to appear appearSecretary Secretary llaywood of the Maryland State I lacing Commission was at Howie today re ¬ ceiving applications from jockeys and train ¬ ers ersR R N Vestal has had to cancel his stall reservations for the G L Blackford horses 1 erause of his inability to obtain cars out of NVw Orleans This was a real disappoint ¬ ment for the Blackford silks were particu ¬ larly prominent last fall at Bowie with Maxi ina Gentility and other good ones onesT T S Coxden will show his colors at the Howie meeting and the horses will be sent over from Pimlieo where Billy Garth has the big string in training trainingJ J H TVvis is now the trainer for the Kirkfield SUubl
