HAWTHORNE PREPARATIONS Datss Changed to Avoid Conflict With Other Meetings Ambitions Program Planned with no Purse PurseLess Less Than 1000 and Several SeveralValuable Valuable Stakes Bourke of the Illinois Jockey Club after a successful missionary trip to Tijuana has returned to Chicago and immediately set to work with other officials of the club prepar ¬ ing program books for the spring meeting at Hawthorne HawthorneAfter After careful consideration Mr Bourke and his associates decided definitely on the spring dates The meeting is to open June SO and to continue for twentyfive days clos ¬ ing on Saturday July 28 28Changing Changing of the dates for the spring meet ¬ ing was brought about after a careful study of neighboring track dates and it is believed that as a result horses of better class will come to Hawthorne as well as a better class of riders It was originally planned to open the old plant on May 2G but with promises from a number of prominent horsemen to come here if the dates were changed the officials advanced their change accordingly accordinglyTrack Track superintendent Johnson Southard has been on the ground for several weeks and will be assisted by Billy Myer another well known race track builder within a few days Mr Myer has not been able to join Southard in the early work due to a slight illness He is improving rapidly however and will probably be on the ground within a few days daysA A shipment of thirtyfive carloads of Indiana loam is en route to Hawthorne for a new top surface and it is believed the course will be faster this year than ever before beforeSuperintendent Superintendent Southard has started work on an exercise track just inside the infield fence and he claims that with a few weeks hard work this course will be nearly as fast as the main course courseThe The infield fence is being torn down and will be replaced Several new barns arc be ¬ ing built and the entire plant is undergoing a complete overhauling and decorating decoratingThe The Illinois Central Railroad is doing con ¬ siderable reconstruction work on the Haw ¬ thorne branch and the Burlington route has begun work on a switch into the grounds Continued on twelfth page HAWTHORNE PREPARATIONS Continued from first page The program calls for six races daily five races having a purse of 1000 with a fea ¬ ture race of 2000 each day dayTwo Two stake races will he carded during the meeting each with 5000 added and a clos ¬ ing day handicap for threeyearolds at a mile and a half with a value of 20000 is being planned plannedStalls Stalls have been reserved for several hun ¬ dred horses including the Meadowbrook Stable C B and F R Irwin string and the W Daniel outfit from Tijuana TijuanaSecretary Secretary Bourke is in receipt of a letter frcm C AV Hay announcing that a number of Kentucky horsemen will ship to Haw ¬ thorne this year yearA A letter from Colonel Matt J Winn vice president and general manager of the Ken ¬ tucky Jockey Club to secretary Bourke in part reads Your letter of March 12 received I had a very pleasant visit to Chicago met a number of old friends and am sorry that I did not have the pleasure of seeing you I am greatly interested in the success of racing in Chicago because the continuance of high class sport in other states helps us in Ken ¬ tucky too and aids in putting the thorough ¬ bred industry on a permanent plane
