POWERFULCANADIANSTABLE » Thorncliffe Horses Making Ready for 1923 Canadian Campaign. ♦ Large Band of Racers Including Three Kings IMaters and Five Fine Juveniles in Charge of Trainer Schelke. ♦ TORONTO. Ont, April 30.— The Thorncliffe Stable has fourteen horses in training this year, including three Kings Plate eligibles and live American-bred two-year-olds, purchased last fall in Kentucky as yearlings. The string is one of the largest that the stable has had in a number of years, but, unlike last year, is not headed by two such grand Canadian-breds as South Shore and Captain Scott. The former, the winner of the Kings Plate, went wrong shortly after the race, while Captain Scott, without doubt one of the best Canadian-breds ever foaled, was cut down so badly in a race at Windsor soon after he won the Fort Erie Derby that he had to be destroyed. The string is in charge of that capable and successful trainer Fred Schelke, and. judging from appearances, looks to have wintered well and to l e well advanced in their preparation for the coming season. The stable is also well fortified with material in years to come, havins seven foals this year, five fillies and two colts. It is the healthy condition of Um yearlings, however, that impressed the visitors, the brown filly by First Sight — Southern Maid and the bay filly by First Sight — Frolic being the pick of the half-dozen. They would be hard to beat anywhere. The two-year-olds arc well turned, with plenty of substanec and bone, with Pacific, by Calgary Britannia, looking more like a three-year-old than just a juvenile about to start on his racing career. Thorndyke is another srrand-looking individual. He is the first colt foaled by Hose Lawrence, the latter having had two fillies in Alice of Wonderland and Blossoms. Of the three nomintaed for the Plate, two are maidens. Trail P.lazer and Blossoms. The former started six times last year, being second once to Prismar at Hamilton, when he was beaten tve lengths over a muddy track, while on another occasion he was third at Windsor, being beaten three and one-quarter lengths by Fair Lavanna, with Doubtful second. Blossoms was second three times in four starts. Ocean Crest has the best record of any of the platers, winning twice last year and being second twice in four starts, one of his victories being in the Coronation Stakes at the Woodbine. The fever seized him at Fort Erie and for a time his life was despaired of. He was retired for the year. l«ut whether the fever will leave any bad effects or not cannot be determined until the actual racing tests come. The three platers have grown and filled out during the winter, witli Trail Blazer and Ocean Crest developing into unusually large three-year-olds. Blossoms is a well-shaped and compact miss, but, being a filly, will hardly start in the Guineas and will likely be saved for future events. It is the intention of trainer Fred Schelke not to ship to the Woodbine track until just a few days before the opening. The string is training at Thorncliffe Park, which is in good condition just now, and, being near to the winter quarters, serves the purpose to a nicety. Horses in Training.
