i r i j I MISS CERINAS SPEED ♦ ■ Lands Her First in a Close Finish With Body Guard. ♦ General Thatcher Outruns Vigil and Qualifies for the Preakness Stakes Handsomely. ♦ — ■ HAVRE DB GRACE, Mtl., April 30.— Miss Cerina. racing for the Audley Farm and ridden by W. Pool, accounted for the Flash Handicap, which was the best offering of the day at Havre de Grace. Her success came in a drive with the Idle Hour Farms Body Guard, while Forest Lore was third. Body Guard was very fractious at the post, but Mein had him under control before he could extend himself and the exercise did not mitigate against his chances. The start found Silk Tassel away in front and she set a fast pace to the stretch. Miss Cerina raced in closest pursuit, while Body Guard was well up. Forest Lore began slowly and was badly outrun until the far turn was reached. Silk Tassel began to shorten her stride on the stretch turn and Miss Cerina took the lead. Mein brought Body Guard up on the outside, but he made a wide turn and lost some ground. The pair staged a spectacular battle through the linal eighth. Pell ruined wiiat slight chance Forest Lore might have had at the head of the stretch when he took the extreme outside path. At the end .Miss Cerina had but a head margin over Body Guard. Miss Cerina. a half-sister to that good campaigner Boniface, was neglected in the speculation and netted a handsome return. SPUING WK.VTHKIt UKTIKNS. There was a return to springtime weather at the course today, although a cool breeze swept across the grounds. The attendance, which journeyed to the coarse to bid adku to the thoroughbred for the spring racing season under the auspicies of the Harford Association, was a large one. The track, Which was turned into an ellipse "1" mud late Saturday, dried out under the warm rays rf the sun and a drying wind and was in much better condition than was expected. The inner rail, protected by the •dogs" all day yesterday and today, was a bit slow and cuppy, while the going on the outside was fast. The track improved as the afternoon progressed and good time was recorded. General Thatcher, the rugged son of Sweep — Polistena. Which races for the Nevada Stock Farm, advanced his stock considerably in his future Preikness Stakes engagement this afternoon when he was an easy winner of the Carolina Purse at a mile and seventy yards. Pack of him and driving to ihe limit was Vigil, while Southern Cross was third. Scratches brought the Held down to seven starters and Irish Kiss, Tippity Witchet. lately Myra and Bygone Days finished in the order named. The race was fashioned for three-year-olds and over and it was Quite a climax when two of the highly regarded eligibles to the great spring races finished first and second over their older opponents. The start was a good one and J. Callahan, making his first appearance uncLr colors this spring, sent General Thatcher to the front. The colt made the pace fast and at no time in the race labored or appeared to be in trouble. Vigil, on the other hand, was asked to pick ut an additional five pounds when jockey Bell tipped the scales at 102. Vigil raced in closest pursuit, while Southern Cress was an easy third. Rounding the turn into the homestretch Vigil moved up with a rusi on the outsde. Callahan, however, shock up his mount but slightly and widened the distance to win casing up. Arthur ami ridden by Abel, was returned the winner of the first lace at four and a half furlongs in ari easy maimer from Roman Girl, which OUtgaSBOd Jackson at the end. A held of eight faced the starter and left in good alignment without any delay. Kehrah made the early running and was pressed by Anna Horton. while A. J. Buja was third. Julia M., as usual. began slowly, but Aid found an opening at the head of the stretch and stole through. Julia M. then easily raced into a long leid and bad a safe margin at the en. I. Roman Girl was forced to work her way up and right at the end headed Jackson. The latter- showed prominently in the early running ami came again at the end. Tidings proved much the best at a band of cheap sprinters that Started in the second race of the day and at the end had a safe margin over Jacques, while Aiken was third. The winner was ridden by G. Rose and outran the others from the start. The J. K L. Ross silks were carried to Victory for the first time during the meeting when Lion dOr, ridden by Claver. was an easy winner from Oppeiman in the Lone Star Purse, while Wellfiirder was third. The latter pair raced themselves into early exhaustion and on the far turn Lion dOr passed them and easily dtew away into a safe lead. Opperman, which was badly outpaced in the early running, gained steadily and had but little difficulty in disposing i-f Wellfinder. The latter had a safe margin over Sandy Bcal, which in turn beat the quitting Bubien. Spugs, W. Reams plater, proved much the best of a band that was asked to go a mile and a sixteenth and at the end had a safe margin over Biff Bang, while Star Healm was third. The winner went to the front at the far turn and held the lead resolutely for the remainder of the race.
