The twenty ninth running of the Kentucky Derby will take place tomorrow afternoon at Louisville. It is a race that annually attracts the attention of followers of the turf the coun- 4 try over, and this year is more open and doubtful of result than has been the case in recent years. Of the eight horses carded to start, Earlj-, The Picket, Bourbon, YYoodlake and Bad News have not started this year and their condition can only be conjectured from such training reports as have emanated from Louisville. Early is almost sure to go to the post favorite. He was a good performer last year and his skillful trainer, Pat Dunne, is re ported to be confident of his success. The best work over the full distance is credited to The Picket, but Bad News and the McDowell pair, Woodlake and Bourbon have shown satisfactory trials. Dan McKenna is in the list, but has not been sent to Louisvdle and Judge Himes did not show Derby form at Memphis. Treacy, a full brother to Wyeth. has shown nothing striking in his only start, but may be a good colt. Mr. Corrigans McGee is not in the list named to start, but he may go to the post if the track turns out to be good, and if he does is likely to finish in the first three. Yesterdays racing at Jamaica provided some exciting finishes and also gave those present a view of widely discussed two and three year-olds which were making their init.al debut under colors for 1903. Africander was ihe cynosure of all eyes when he paraded to the post for the Fulton Stakes, the feature of the afternoon. He opened at 6 to 5 in the belting but his price gradually receded until at post time the layers were giving as high as 4 to 1 on his chances, and Dr. Sayior was installed as the favorite. The winner turned up in Rightful, from the Schorr stable, with Africander second and The Colonist third. Eight horses faced the barrier before starter Fitz-Gerald, but he failed to catch them in line and they were off to a poor start. Ahumada was the first to show and he was suffered to set the pace to the half mile post, closely followed by Rightful, Miss Dorothy and Dr. Sayior. Upon reaching the half mile post jockey Bullman rushed Rightful into the lead, wtih Ahumada in second place and Embarrassment, which had followed Rightfuls lead, lapped on the Kyle horse. The field raced in this position to the final quarter, where Africander, which had been far back all the way, came around his opponents and set sail for the leader, but the latter held his lead gamely and went under the wire with a length to spare. Colonist outstayed Dr. Sayior for third place; the latter made a game effort in the last hundred yards, reaching second place, but his effort told and he tired. The third race was a thriller, pro- viding a blanket finish when Molinos. another from the Schorr stable, outstayed High Ball and Hazelwood. the first three finishing noses apart. It was the first start for High Ball and his showing was impressive, coming from fifth place in the last seventy yards and only losing the verdict by a nose.
