• I i I I ; : History of the Clark Handicap Established the same year as the Kentucky Derby — in 1875 — the Clark Handicap has an uninterrupted history and today it will be run for the forty-ninth time. From 1875 to 1901 1 it was run as the Clark Stakes and was for three-year-clds. For the first six years the distance i was two miles and such smashers as Voltigeur, Creedmoor, McWhirter, Leveller, Falsetto and , Kinkead were the winners at that trying route. In 1881 the distance was reduced to one and ; i r. quarter miles and the celebrated Hindoo won it that year. The noted jockey Jimmy McLaughlin rode the winners three years in succession — in 1880, 81 and 82. The famous colored 1 rider Isaae Murphy captured it twice in succession, in 1884-85, and also in 1890. like all other Kentucky stakes the value to the winner of the Clark Handicap was quite modest in the early [ f years, but nevertheless that fact did nofc deter some of the best racers of the times from measuring strides in it, as a glance over the list of its winners will reveal. It is indeed befitting j : that tha name of the gallant Exterminator is included among them. Here are the galaxy of I | high -class horses which adorn the roster of winners of the Clark Handicap, together with other interesting data in its history: I Year. First. Age. Jockeys. Wt. Second.
