Here and There on the Turf Sarazen s Impressive Win. Wise Counsellors Record. Zev and My Own. One Handicappers Estimate. The victory of Mrs. Vanderbilts Sarazen over Edward F. Simms Happy Thoughts at Laurel Friday was such a hollow one that as a spectacle it did not amount to anything more than the gallop of Zev in front of Papyrus at Belmont Park. There was absolutely nothing to it as a race, and the son of High Time and Rush Box has had no easier task in his unbeaten march to the top of the juvenile division. As a matter of fact Happy Thoughts did not begin to race to her form, and it was apparent that she was not altogether at home in the going. She is an infinitely better fiily than the race would indicate, but her races have shown that long since, though it is doubtful if she will ever see the day that she will beat Sarazen. He has proved himself all the way up to the mile distance and has accomplished each victory in such a casual way that the impression is created that no one knows yet just how much he has had in reserve. With the horses of brilliant speed it is always well to have courage as well as speed put to the acid test before any extravagant claims are made for them, but thus far there has been nothing shown capable of testing the courage of this speed marvel. Maxie Hirsch has Sarazen in rare condition and has not dodged any opportunity to show him under silks. Unfortunately the fact of Sarazen being a gelding denies him many a big opportunity, and it will be a serious bar to his reaching his full measure of fame next season. There is one more chance for Sarazen this year that should not be permitted to go by, and that is a meeting with J. S. Wards Wise Counsellor, winner of the Queen City Handicap at Latonia Saturday. This colt gave a truly brilliant performance when under a burden of 125 pounds he easily ran a mile in 1:39, making all the pace and finishing out the route with many pounds in reserve. He was the top weight of the field, and it was a race that at once gives him jevery right to dispute the championship with the conqueror of Happy Thoughts. Like both Sarazen and Happy Thoughts, Wise Counsellor has had limited opportunities this year. He was not named for any of the rich stakes of the East, and naturally he was not made eligible for the early closing three-year-old stakes. Kentucky knows all about Wise Counsellor, but he has confined his efforts to those tracks. In the Queen City Handicap, when he gave weight to them all and won so easily, there was one of the fairly good ones in the East that could not take down any part of the money. This was the Rancocas Stables Bracadale. Wise Counsellor has done about a!l that has been asked of him, and J. S. Ward, who purchased him recently from T. C. Bradley, is riot in the habit of keeping fit horses in the stable. Max Hirsch will advise Mrs. Vander-bilt.to send Sarazen against Wise Counsellor, or any other two-year-old, over any distance, and it would seem that the way is open for one more big race during the Churchill Downs meeting at Louisville. Colonel Matt Winn never overlooks an opportunity to furnish what is best in racing, and if there is any good reason for the putting on of a. special to bring these fast-running two-year-olds together he will surely make it attractive. In the meantime there continues great interest in the coming meeting between Harry F. Sinclairs Zev and Admiral Carey T. Graysons My Own in the mile and three-quarters of the Latonia Championship Stakes, to be run over the Latonia track next Saturday, the closing day of the Latonia meeting. It was fitting that the Kentucky Jockey Club, at the suggestion of Colonel Winn, should have increased the added money to make it worth 0,000 to the winner should both of these great colts be sent to the post. It was right in keeping with the big things for which the Kentucky Jockey Club has ever been famous. Both colts are coming up to the race to the entire satisfaction of their trainers, and with favorable weather and track conditions it will unquestionably prove a better race than the famous meeting between Zev and Papyrus. W. P. Burch has made his arrangements to ship My Own to Latonia Tuesday, and Hil-drath will send Zev on Thursday. - The son" of The Finn and Miss Kearney has been doing so well since his gallop in front of Papyrus on October 20 that he is sure to be in better condition Saturday that he was when he made a show of the Epsom Derby winner. There is an amazing confidence in the Hildreth camp over the coming meeting with My Own, but Admiral Grayson and his friends have just as abiding faith in the ability of My Own. It would be pleasing if the Latonia track was fast for the running of the race so that the comparative test would be decisive. Zev is such a free runner through muddy going that he will surely have an advantage if the track is muddy, and-it is greatly to be desired that the conditions be such that no excuse will be possible for either colt. Frank J. Bryan, handicapper for the Maryland Jockey Club, has made a slight amendment in the generally accepted estimate of Zev and My Own in the Pimlico Autumn Handicap. This handicap is down for decision at Pimlico Friday and is at a mile and a quarter. Of course, both Zev and My Own will be at Latonia Friday, but it is interesting to see that such a good handicapper as Mr. Bryan puts the two colts at exactly the same notch. Each is handicapped at 130 pounds. In most of the previous handicaps that have been issued Zev has been required to give My Own three pounds. This handicap is for three-year-olds, and with these two away from the grounds the weights drop nine pounds, with H. P. Whitneys Enchantment and Richard T. Wilsons Wilderness both rated at 121 pounds. Rialto, winner of the Washington Handicap at Laurel Saturday, is under 109 pounds. That race was run before the penalties become effective, so that his fine victory will make no difference in his weight. Untidy, a stable-mate to Rialto and the filly that gave Zev such a battle in the running of the Lawrence Realization Stakes, is handicapped at 118 pounds, but she is out of training for the year and will not be brought to the post.
