FURNISHES SURPRISE Lady Astor Scores Unexpectedly In Sparkling Performance. Runs Mile in 1:37 to beat Ten-Lec, Cherry Tree, Dr. Clark and Whiskaway. H LOUISVILLE, Ky., Nov. 15. Lady Astor, which in a former start here showed a dull performance, furnished a surprise in the feature race, a mile handicap, when she beat home a good band that included TenrLec, Cherry Tree and others. She held out but slight hopes for her few backers in the earlier parts of the race when she was far back, while the leaders, Ten-Lec, Cherry Tree and Dr. Clark, the latter pair coupled as the Goldblatt entry, were showing the way and seemingly would bo fighting it out at the end. Lady Astor, however, decided to extend herself when reaching the stretch and, coming on with a sensational burst of speed, gradually overhauled the Goldblatt pair and caught Ten-Lec in the last seventy yards to beat her by a scant length. Whiskaway, which has been , a source of aggravation to the players in. these parts, again sulked after racing prominently for half a mile and brought up in the wake of the others. The mile in 1:37 was a fast one. HEEEMOX DESTROYED. In the preceding race, a three-quarters dash, bringing out a fairly good band or sprinters, witnessed the termination of Here-mons racing career. He went amiss just before reaching the stretch, his leg below the ankle, which has been under suspicion for a long time, giving way and the injury was found so grave that he had to be destroyed. The Audley Farm Stables Pegasus, an outstanding favorite, won here in hollow stylo from Great Jaz, with Betty Beall in thtra place. Pegasus was an easy winner, but his victory was put in jeopardy when Pool came over sharply in the stretch and slightly impeded Great Jaz. The worst upset of the afternoon came with the running of the third race, incidentally it exploded pretentions of Blind as a good jockey. That youngster when he first came to these parts gave flattering promise of being one of the best prospects here. But recently he has shown an incompetency that puts him out of calculations unless he overcomes his timidity. He had the mount on Miss Meise in this race and he repeatedly took her back when he had opportunity to move to the front next to the inner rail and approaching the stretch he rode wide where he lost enough ground to have won by, Isosceles scoring by a narrow margin while Elias O. beat Miss Meise in the closing strides. CAMDEN COLORS IN FRONT. J. N. Camdens colors were carried to victory in the two-year-old dash at a mile when his Graeme won from Giblon with Lord Martin, the favorite finishing third. Lord Martin was coupled with New Gold, but that racer was pulled up immediately at the start by Wallace for no apparent reason and finished far back of the others. Graeme3 victory was assisted by his stable companion Dudley, which in the earlier stages of the race, forced a fast pace and helped dispose of Giblon which was closest in pursuit. Mill Boy graduated from the maiden ranks in the second race, bringing to the post fifteen youngsters. He had to be ridden out to beat home Nogales by a nose with Levoy in third place. , The opener also brought to the post a band of fifteen ordinary platers and it furnished a victory for Ben Valet, which came away in the last sixteenth to beat Spats and Charles Henry, the latter pair grouped with others in the field. Sister Flo, one of the well regarded ones in the race, lost her rider in the first quarter when she ran onto the heels of some horses in front of her. Jockey Pevic, her rider, escaped with a shaking up. The closing dash brought to the post some fairly good platers and likewise reintroduced the frequently barred bad acting Friz. Lord Wrack, which has been performing consistently here, jolted the form players when he failed dismally and finished outside of the placed ones, Oo La La winning well in hand from Bobbie Shea, with Bandel in third place. Who Knows Me was claimed from the last race by W. Perkins for ,700. W. M. Cain had a claim in for this same "racer, but was outdrawn by W. Perkins. William Dondas is arranging for a winter campain at Tijuana and will ship his recent purchase Heremon and several other rorses to that track early next week. The stables of Al Kirby and W. H. Hall will be shipped to New Orleans Friday night.
