Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of Nov. 16, 1903 Racing at Benning, Latonia and Oakland. Jockey "Jack" Martin, several pounds heavier than when he used to ride Advance Guard and Zoroaster for Aleck Chields, is at Oakland to ride for Walter Jennings during the local season. Jack came out of two trying surgical operations last summer with flying colors and is all right again. The racing at Latonia was dull, all the winners in all the races having margins of two or more lengths. What was carded as the big race of the afternoon, a steeplechase handicap over the short course, was the easiest kind of a victory for the heavily backed favorite, Ceylon, which finished pulled up to win by eight hngths from Falella. Unfortunately Bennings opening day was spoiled by the showery weather that prevailed during the afternoon. The feature race was the Columbia Handicap, at seven-eighths of a mile, for three-year-olds and over, and it fell to John A. Drakes High Chancellor, which was an added starter. High Chancellor was a good horse today, and had to be to win. He was on the outside of the others all the way and came fast in the final furlong when the others tired and, finishing fast, -was going aw-ay at the end. Castaliah made a game bid in the stretch, tiring unexpectedly in the last hundred yards, but saved second place from Elsie L. by one and one-half lengths. Orfc Welb made it a double for the Drake colors when he won the following race, a dash of six and a half furlongs for two-year-olds, beating the first-time starter Lord of the Valley by one length. The latters showing was impressive and he probably needed this race, as he appeared short. Champlain took third place.
