ZEV REACHES DOWNS Rancocas Champion Now On Scene of Saturdays Battle. Interest in Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes Happy Thoughts in Excellent Mile Gallop. LOUISVILLE, Ky., Nov. 15. Zev and his stable companions and a retinue of handlers, as well as trainer Hildreth and jockeys Sande and Fator, reached Churchill Downs this afternoon, having been delayed en route. A connecting train was held for them at Cincinnati through the courtesy of the Louisville and Nashville Railroad officials. Zev was reported to have shipped in fine style and was led to his quarters followed by a big throng, eager to get a close up of the largest money winning racer on the American turf. Mr. Hildreth expressed confidence that Zev would on Saturday next show to better advantage than he did in the Latonia Championship Stakes. He offered no excuses for his defeat by In Mcmoriam and attributed Zevs undoing on that occasion to the colt not running in his best style. Instances of this sort occur frequently and it is hard to explain. It is almost certain that in his race Saturday Zev will not be kept restrained as he was for the first mile in the Latonia Championship Stakes and that he will force a stiff pace with a view to vanquishing In Memoriam in speedy style. It is still a moot question if Zev can outsprint In Memoriam. Many good critics here dont think so. CRACK JUVEMLES TO START. Although the match between Zev and In Memoriam is claiming the almost undivided attention of the racing public, the fourth running of the valuable Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes, which will also be an attraction at Churchill Downs Saturday, is not altogether being shoved into the background, for the meeting of Wise Counsellor, Happy Thoughts and other juvenile stars of the country in that important event is expected to provide a sparkling contest, "With the exception of Sarazen, all of the best juveniles will clash in this race, and upon their performances will hinge the all important question of the years two-year-old championship. Happy Thoughts was given her first introduction to the local track when she was worked between the first and second races and with Schuttinger in the saddle went a mile at an even pace. She ran the quarter in 23, half in 47, three-quarters in 1:13 and mile in 1 :41. She pulled up sound. The forthcoming meeting of Zev and In Memoriam in a match race Saturday naturally recalls the great contest between Ten Broeck and Mollie McCarty, and the general impression that the latter event was the only match race run off at Churchill Downs is corrected by judge Charles F. Price, who has delved into local racing records and dug up another similar event that attracted almost as much attention as the Mollie McCarty-Ten Broeck race. The event in Question was the meeting of M. F. Dwyers Cleophus and C. E. Pattersons Suisun, which was run at Churchill Downs May 14, 1896, and resulted in a nose victory for Cleophus, ridden by Will Simms, noted colored rider, who had a week previously won the Kentucky Derby with the Dwyer Brothers Ben Brush. SUISU2TS FINE RECORD. Cleophus had a short time previously been bought by Mr. Dwyer and had won only one race, the Debutante Stakes. Suisun, on the other hand, had come to Churchill Downs with a brilliant record of eight straight victories at New Orleans, Memphis, Nashville and Lexington, and was considered unbeatable. Both were two-year-olds and the rivalry between partisans of the pair became so Iseen that a match race was agreed upon. The weather was fine and the track fast on the afternoon of the race and a big crowd "Was out The match was for 50, a significant stake as compared with these days of princely sums, and the Louisville Jockey Club added a similar amount, all of the money to go to the winner. Each contender carried 115 pounds and the distance was five-eighths. Bunn, who had piloted the unbeaten Suisun in all her races, had the leg up that afternoon. The five-eighths was run in 1 :01 and, as mentioned above, Cleophus was the winner in a sensational finish. The Ten Broeck-Mollie McCarty race antedated the Cleophus-Suisun event by eighteen years and was run July 4, 1S78. Billio Walker, who rode Baden-Baden to victory in the Kentucky Derby of that year, and rode Ten Broeck in all of his principal races, was astride of the hors in the race against the California mare. Walker is still living in Louisville and is a regular attendant at the Churchill Downs and other Kentucky meetings.
