Leading Winners of Last Year Fortunate indeed was the turfman -who had in his stable a horse able to win one or more of the many valuable stake races offered during- the campaign of 1923. The complete returns for the year show that each of the thirty leading money winners won over ?20,000. Beginning with Zev and his total of 72,00S there were seven that won over 550,000, as follows: St. James, ,3S5; In Memoriam, ,732; Chacolet, 3,970; Vigil, 2,G75; Wise Counsellor, ,oio, and Beau Butler, ?59,9S0. These figures speak eloquently of the opportunities the race horse of today enjoys compared to the stars of yesterday. Here we see horses winning more in one year than some of the noted American horses of years gone by did during their entire turf career, though they raced oftener and in some cases far outclassed the larger money winners of the present day.
