HERTZ STOCK FARM First Foal Arrives at the Newly Established Leona Stud. Twenty-five Mares and Stallion Luke McLuke Nucleus of Chicago Sportsmans Venture. The first thoroughbred foal of the year at the Leona Farm, owned by Mrs. Fannie K. Hertz of Chicago is a filly by Blink from Paquerette, born on January 29. In addition to being an early foal, this filly marks the beginning of important thoroughbred horse production at Leona Farm, Cary III. During less than two years more than twenty-five mares and fillies of fashionable lineage have been gathered as the result of careful selection, here and abroad, to serve as a nucleus for the breeding and racing estaDlishments to be maintained there. The premier sire of this nursery for thoroughbred horses is Luke McLuke, already having many winners to his credit and a great race horse himself. During his career in training he never was out of the money and was proclaimed the champion three-year-old of 1914, when his victories included the Kentucky Handicap, one and one-quarter miles in 2:02, and the Belmont Stakes, one and three-eighths miles in 2:20, carrying 12U pounds. Luke McLukes sire was Ultimus, an inbred son of Domino and a magnificent individual that never started, having ruptured a ligament in training as a two-year-old, but lie was afterward sold at public auction for 6,000. LIST OF BROODMARES. In Leona Farms determined endeavor to produce thoroughbred horses of the highest type, neither effort nor expense has been spared. The recent foal from Paquerette exemplifies the aim of Leona Farm toward producing thoroughbred animals of superior type. Paquerette is one of the nine purchased during the last December sales at Newmarket and landed in New York one month ago. Her sire, John o Gaunt, was by Isinglass, winner of tho Derby and Two Thousand Guineas from La Fleche, winner of the Oaks and second in the Derby.-both of them also having won the St. Leger. No greater combination of winning performances can be found. Blink, sire of the newcomer, has already reached a prominent place in British thoroughbred production. His sire is Sunstar, winner of the Derby and Two Thousand Guineas and whose produce includes Sua Briar, a brilliant performer in this country and now one of the leading American sires.
