Other .lumping Stars. » , By R K. COC88KUL. LONDON, Maroh 12. — Stuff flown has recorded himself the best four-year-old hurdler la BasStSssI this seastm. With the approach | of flat racing, which commences at Lincoln, March 24. it is possible to pick out those ; young horses which have made good reputa- | tions during the winter season. Next in order to Stuff Gown would l e placed Border | Ranger, First Maffic. Xoce d"Argent, Battle Cruiser and Old Nic. A year ago Oroomsport ran up a remarkable series of successes before he was sold for 0,000. only to fall for the first time in I his career in the first race in which he carried his now owners colors. This winter he started once, when he failed to make a show at Kempton Park in January. The reputation of most race horses is surely the most fragile thing in existence. Stuff iown in his first race ran fourth to Bawn Xa Mas last November at Birmingham. It was bad luck for Parkinson that | after winning his next race Bawn Na Has overreached himself and had to be taken out of training. Since Stuff Gown ran at Birmingham, he has competed in nine races, winning seven in succession. lie then finished second to Boddam, a five-year-old. in the Champion Hurdle Cup and took up his winning vein a week ago in the Lingfield Hurdle Cup. worth ,075. Stuff Gown has shown his ability to carry-big weights with facility. He is a naturally quick jumper and has plenty of speed. He is owned and trained by Stanley Wootton, who bought him as a yeailing at Doncaster for ,500. He was bred by Peter Fitz Geralti at Adare, County Limerick. Ireland. The second foal of his dam. Stuff flown is a hay j colt by Junior son of Symington from Porphyria, which, in foal to Bachelors Double, vas cheaply sold for ,650 at the last December sales. The Due Decazes. former owner of Trince Palatine was the buyer and took her to France. Porphyris is by Santoi now twenty-seven years old from Cythera. which won the Acorn stakes at Epsom. She is by Cyllene from Stolen Love, whose produce have won nearly 0,000 and include Nassau, now one of the leading stallions in New Zealand. Stolen Ixve was by Buccaneer from True Iove. the dam of Sweetheart, which sired ftarehaven winner of the Cesarewitch. 1*. I Purcell Gilpin named his Newmarket home "Clarehaven" after the famous mare. The form of Border Ranger is not so high. He has won three races, been placed second twice and third twice. His best race was the Eden Vale Hurdle handicap of ,050 at Ling-field in January. His form on the flat was most moderate. Border Ranger is a son of Call of the Wild by Polymelus. He cost his owner ,550 at Newmarket last May. Almond Eyes, his dam. is also a daughter of Santoi, being from Edenglass. by Marco. She ccmes of a not notable winner producing line. First Magics Four Straight. First Magic started the season in brilliant style by winning four straight races. He next tan second and was twice unplaced. All his victories were gained when he was a three-year-old and all over twelve furlongs. At the turn of the year the distance of all hurdle races is increased to two miles. Here is where First Magic failed. His best performance was to win the Newbury Juvenile Hurdle race of .S45, carrying 15C pounds. When a foal First Magic was purchased for ,050 at Newmarket on behalf of Mrs. Hugh Peel, for whom he won races in 1922 and 192.1. Mrs. Peel won the Grand National with Poelhyln. Eirst Magic is by White Magic. He is the first living foal of Prefer-et ce. by Pericles by Persimmon from Eiku, by Eittleton. Noce dArgent might have played a bril- liant part during the winter. He won in noteworthy style at Kempton at Christmas Nothing was seen of him for two months as he contracted a mild form of blood poisoning. On February 29 he was narrowly beaten in the International Hurdle Handicap when he carried 161 pounds and was conceding two years and two pounds to a penalized and gi.od horse named Chartered, which had won his last three starts. Noce dArgent has a good reputation on the flat. Many people consider he has a chance in the Lincolnshire handicap or the Liverpool Cup. He is a four-year-old bay gelding for which his owner-trainer, Stanley Wootton, paid ,550 after he won a selling race at Nottingham last August. Subse- quently he won in succession four handicaps worth nearly ,500. His sire, Braxted by Forfarshire, was a high class hurdle racer. He is from Princess St. George, by Prince Olaf a non-racing son of Eager from Lady St. leorge, by Clrlldwick from a half- ii.sler to Hampton. When he defeated Light Jester at Hurst Park last August Old Nic revealed he possessed merit as a race horse. He first ran over hurdles at the end of January. In three starts he has won twice and been placed second, making a good impression. He also I ad been supported to win the Lincolnshire handicap. At Manchester last November he ran third beaten three lengths to Noce dArgent, which was giving one pound only. At Lincoln, Old Nio is handicapped to receive ten pounds from Noce dArgent. As both are fit fiom hurdling their chance must be respected. Old Nic is a brown colt by Legal by Desmond from Nicotine, by Bay Ilonald. He was bred by his owner, Sir H. Bird. Battle Cruiser, in his last four races, has I been successful twice and placed second and third. At ! icestcr on February 18 he car-j ried off the Kilby Hurdle race, beating C-in-, turon by five lengths. He is a first foal or." Pttti Sing, by Santry from Jewell of Asia, by Santoi. He was bred by Sir John llobin-scn. the breeder of Omar Khayyam -ar.d cost ,:J30 as a yearling. He was a winn.-r at : j two years old. Mercutio, the sire of Battle Cruiser, himself won the Lincolnshire handicap and a fortune for the late Charles Hib-bert in 1011. Mercutio is a brother to Brax- ted, sire of Noce dArgent.
