PRINCESS DOREEN FIT » Speedy Filly Qualifies Handsomely for Kentucky Oaks Saturday. ♦ Bain Alters Conditions and Causes Substitute Race. False Faces Close Call. • ■ LOUISVILLE, Ky., May 27.— The Audley Farm Stables Princess Doreen, a candidate for the Kentucky Oaks, which has its decision next Saturday, was returned the winner of the Modesty Purse at seven-eighths, serving as a preliminary for the Oaks. She won in easy fashion from some highly regarded three-year-old fillies that included Beautiful Agnes and Befuddle, with three others following distantly. There was doubt as to Princess Doreens ability to race well in the muddy going, resulting in Beautiful Agnes and Befuddle having the call over her. She upset calculations by racing promptly Into a good lead soon after the start and holding sway for the entire race, to win easing up. Beautiful Agnes made a gallant effort to overhaul her in the stretch but near the end she began tiring and it required hard riding for her to stay in front of Befuddle. The latter did not race as if favored by the going and failed to display the brilliant speed she is known to possess. She came wide into the stretch which cost her some I J ground. MUD REDUCES FIELDS. A respite of twenty-four hours seems to ■ be the longest that these parts can enjoy j from rain and the storm of last night brought | about changed track conditions in favor of outstanding mud runners. The fields were I consequently reduced to a minimum, the original fourth race, which was intended as a feature, being called off on account of the ; I heavy withdrawals and a new race substi- j tuted to complete the seven-race program. j Threatening weather was present through-Out the afternoon but the attendance did not show any material decrease and enthusiasm in the sport was as keen as formerly. Several stirring finishes enlivened proceedings, that in the second race in which five of the contenders came to the finish short margins apart, had the big crowd in a frenzy. Gifford A. Cochrans False Face added another purse to that gentlemans account, but his backers experienced a sinking sensation right at the end when Ocean Current challenged stubbornly, but failed by a matter of inches, although he headed False Face when one stride beyond the finish. False Face began well, but when approaching the first turn Hum took him back to avoid being forced back by Seths Treasure. He passed the latter with a rush before reaching the stretch and took what appeared a decisive lead, but Ocean Current, coming steadily, forced Hum to ride his hardest to last long enough to get the verdict. Thundergod, ; ; after making a poor beginning, came fast in the stretch and outstayed the tiring Seths j Treasure. CHINN COLORS SUCCESSFUL. P. T. Ch inns colors were successful for the first time during the meeting when . Poland galloped away with the purse in the opening race for which he was a pronounced l favorite. Parke took him to the front immediately after the start and won all the way with ease. Mexican Tea was close up for the entire race and finished in second place with Dunlo heading the others for ■ third money. Lady Marian was prominent in the early running but faded away in the stretch. The two-year-olds starting in the second race furnished a rattling finish, with Ivory : managing to beat Donna Santa home by a nose, with Buttress only inches back of the pair and slightly in advance of Fair Vision, with Miss Kmmert also close up. The winner was in doubt until the very end, for the five contenders were fighting it out strenuously | throughout the last sixteenth. Ivory was the favored one and her victory was popular. Jefferson Livingston added another purse to his account when his Newmarket won the third race. The horse raced in improved form over his previous start. The muddy going j might have been more to his liking than the fast track of his preceding race. He was1 : energetically ridden this afternoon and raced into the lead in the first quarter. Thereafter ! Pool was kept busy, particularly in the last eighth, to the task of keeping him going | and maintaining a lead over the fast-coming Fancy Free. The latter began slowly but gained steadily in the stretch racing. Sea "ourt was best of the others and finished in third place. | After many trials Napoo succeeded in j getting home in advance to land his first purse of the meeting. He was in with five others in the substitute race, a mile dash,; j and won after leading for the entire way. | I Sand* of Pleasure, under a hard drive, out-j I Stayed Macbeth for second place. The early part of the race found Ruby and Kinburn 1 | j j | I I 1 both prominent, but they began tiring before reaching the stretch. ; Pall led, extensively backed, got home a half length in advance of Dobson, but had ! to be ridden hard near the end to da so. I Dobson had to come from far back in the stretch. Stump Jr. was best of tha others ! and took third place. Oo. La La, one of the starters, was claimed by A. W. Jackson j at a cost of J 2, 400.
