OPENING DAY AT OMAHA Spring Race Meeting to Be Inaugurated at Ak-Sar-Ben Field This Afternoon. OMAHA. Neb.. May 30.— -Elaborate preparations have been made for the opening of the annual summer meeting of the Ak-Sar-Ben Racing Association, which will have its inception tomorrow. The Governors Handicap, a dash of five and one-half furlongs with a value of ,500. the inaugural feature, has attracted a field of ten hoises. Of these The Araucanian. CoL Bakers Tijuana development, has been accorded top weight of 118 pounds. He will have as his stable companions Judge Pryor. a sprinter of extreme speed, Keegan and Treasurer. The Baker aggregation will no doubt rule strong favorites. C. B. Irwin makes a play for first money with Ahadane, All Over and Chiva. These horses have been freshened up since Tijuana and are reported to be in good condition. George Drumheller has entered a pair well known to the turf in My Reverie and Lady Gorham. My Daddy, a three-year-old, is the remaining member of the party. Fair .weather and a fast track is in prospect. Hotels in Omaha report an influx of visitors and the Ak-Sar-Ben management expects a record-breaking attendance to witness the beginning of the sport. Gov. Charles W. Bryan of the state of Nebraska has consented to grace the local course with his presence and will occupy a gayly decorated box. the guest of Ak-Sar-Ben. Prominent people in his party include Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Newbranch. owner of the Omaha World-Herald ; Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Updike, publisher of the Omaha Bee. and Mr. and Mrs. Thomas C. Byrne, local captain of industry. It is Gov. Bryan in whose honor the inaugural feature is named. This chief executive will crown the winner with a floral horseshoe. Judge William Shelley, who is to officiate as presiding steward, arrived yesterday from Cleveland. Ohio. Jockey J. Heupel came in from Kentucky to ride for Williams Brothers and jockeys Fritz Weiner. Elmer Fator, J. Gormley. G. i Sutton and Arthur Collins arrived from Tan-foran. Weiner is under contract to Col. Baker for the meeting. The latter has also •c-cuied second call on apprentice O. Clark.
