ROMAN BACHELOR GAMELY Triumphs Over Flying Cloud in Stamina Testing Finish. Links Furnishes Surprise In Steeplechase Lcatherwood Adds to Reputation As Consistent Racer. HAVRE DE GRACE, Md., Oct 1 The Laurel Park Studs imported racer, Roman Bachelor, beat a band of good milers in the Whitemarsh Purse at Havre de Grace this afternoon when he led the odds-on favorite, Flying Cloud, home by a half length. Roman Bachelor was ridden by J. Maiben, made much of the pace and finished with rare courage under punishment In the early running Opperman and Peddler were sent to the front and raced like a team into the backstretch. Maiben then sent Roman Bachelor up on the outside and before the half-mile post was reached he caught and passed the leaders. Flying Cloud made a bold bid inside the eighth post, but in the last twenty yards he tired. The Glen Riddle Purse, the other feature race, fell to Trip Lightly, which came from behind in the stretch and beat Alex Woodliffe by three parts of a length. Tho first race proved an easy victory for Sun Sabre, a first time starter. Wallace kept her under restraint in the early stages and evidently did not want to show her up, vi-.en he let out a wrap at the stretch turn the mare went to the front with a rush and at the end beat Slow and Easy by thre lengths. The latter went wide at the turns and lost ground entering the homestretch. Out of Sight was beaten by six lergths after showing early speed. Links furnished a surprise Avhen he beat his opponents in the steeplechase. Sims rode a. patient race and waited until the last half-mile before making his move. Leatherwood added another to the list of victories he has scored this year when he won the fourth race in hollow fashion. A change in riders brought improvement in the horses running. Wallace sent Leatherwood to the" front soon after the start but did not race him off his feet, keeping him under slight restraint until in the homestretch, when Odd Seth made his effort Leatherwood had something in reserve to stall off his challenge. At the end Leatherwood had a margin of a length and a half going easy. Pep to Peep beat Everglade as far for second place. Sun Lady won the sixth race with ridiculous ease. Maiben had her under restraint for five-eighths and waited until rounding the far turn before making his move. When called on the favorite moved up on the outside with a, rush and, after drawing into a commanding lead, was again taken in hand and Avon with lots in reserve from Jolly, which finished fast in the stretch run. Soggarth Aroon and Captain Ccstigan made the early pace, but quit to a walk in the last quarter.
