SHUFFLE ALONG WINS First in Capital Handicap, the Opening Feature at Laurel. His Victory Marks Double Success for A. C. Bostwick, Lunetta Being Other Winner. LAUREL, Md., Oct. 7. Shuffle Along, well ridden by Scobie, won the sixth renewal of the J5.000 Capital Handicap at the opening of Laurels twenty-three day meeting this afternoon. The four-year-old son of Luke McLuke Black Brocade, ran the three-quarters in 1 :12, finished a length in front of New Hampshire and won ,940 for A. C. Bostwick whose colors had been carried to victory in the previous race by Lunetta. "Will Land finished third. Osprey saved his stake by finishing fourth. Silk Tassel, Sunayr, Pep to Peep. Time Exposure, Swingalong, BIghcart, Reparation, Lord Baltimore II., Barbary Bush and Fluvanna completed the procession in the order named. The start was long delayed by the misbehavior of Shuffle Along and Silk Tassel. Finally they were away with Time Exposure and "Will Land in front setting the pace. Shuffle Along began well and showed good speed. Scobie kept him close to the rail behind the first two until straightened out, then set him down. He drew away from the tiring Time Exposure. New Hampshire was in the center of the bunch but escaped interference and closed wtih good speed to pass "Will Land in the final sixteenth for second money. "Warm weather and a fast track prevailed for the inauguration of the Maryland State Fair annual session of sport which will close on November 1, with the running of the 525,000 Washington Handicap as a feature. The inaugural card was good and the residents of this section turned out 15,000 strong to sec the racing. STEEPLECHASE TO YICAIItE. Hal Parrs Vicaire won the steeplechase, beating Boatman the pacemaker in the final half mile of the two mile contest. Three lengths separated them at the end. Chuckle beat the others in a field of nine good platers. Boatman fenced grandly and made the pace easily until only a few obstacles remained to be cleared. Then J. Pierce guided the son of Berrilldon around the pacemaker and wore liim down coming to the fourteenth and final jump. Chuckle was rated close to the early leaders and finished with good speed, being beaten a length and a half for second money. Lunetta leading throughout the nine furlongs saving ground all the way carried L. Lang in the silks of A. C. Bostwick to a heaa victory over Yankee Princess in the claiming raco that filled fourth position on the card. Guelph finished third beaten a neck for second money. Yankee Princess followed Lunetta closest from the start. Guelph was outrun but finished fastest of all on outside. Marylanders received their first opportunity of seeing an offspring of Man o AVar in action in the Joppa, the third contest on the program. American Flag introduced the blood of the famous son of Fair Play to the populace of this state. Battle Field, one of the youngsters bought by G. A. Cochran from the Xalapa Farm Stable at Saratoga yearling sales last August for 4,000, also participated in the Joppa. AMERICAN FLAG THIRD. American Flag finished third to Swinging and Primrose. Swinging carried the silks of H. P. Whitney and was the second winner of the afternoon ridden by Ivan Parke in as many trips to the post. Retire headed the Whitney home-bred for a short distance but Parke saved ground all the way and kept his mount going just long enough to win by a nose from Primrose which came to the outsido with a rush in the closing strides. American Flag began slowly, gained steadily on the inside and challenged in the stretch but weakened slightly right at the end. Battle Field never was prominent. Ivan Parke, in the silks of A. H. Horris, piloted Midinette to a neck victory over Slow and Easy in the opening race of the meeting. It was at five and a half furlongs and brought together two-year-olds. Menthol finished third. Slow and Easy and All Gone raced to the front shortly after the start, but Slow and Easy was taken off the pace, while Menthol raced around both of them and into the lead. Straightening out Slow and Easy responded to a call and wore down Menthol, but had nothing left when Parke came charging up on the inside in the final sixteenth after saving ground all around the turn. Royal Duck was taken to the front rounding the far turn in the sixth and held on well under riding of C. Lang to win by half a length from Widgeon in a contest at a mile and a sixteenth. Mensis closed some ground to be third.
