ZEV S THIRD STRAIGHT 1 3 Rancocas Star Wins for Third Successive Racing Day. Shows Dazzling Speed in Covering Three-Quarters in 1:10 Menifee in Sparkling Form. t i 1 LATONIA, Ky., Oct 13. The Rancocas Stables Zev scored h:s third successive vie- tory in three consecutive race days, when he i carried eff honors in the Columbus Day Purse c at three-quarters, having an added value of ,800. His success today was achieved in 4 the same easy manner that his preceding ones here have been recorded and it showed 1 a "return of last years champion to his best 1 form. He was assigned an impost of 117 pounds under the conditions and he carried t it with extreme ease. Baffling led him in , the early stages but it seemed on sufferance . only, for Zev was under restraint and he flashed past Baffling oh call. Fator, who t had the mount on Zev, blundered and might have put his victory in jeopardy when he ailowed Zev to swerve into Baffling in pass- 3 ing. It did not affect the result, for Baffling was unable to cope with the easterner. When straightened out for the stretch Zev 1 continued under mild restraint and drew away in the last eighth to have a two j lengths margin on Baffling at the finish. Sunspero and Best Pal, which made up the remainder of the field, raced far in the wake of the leading pair and staged a spirited duel for third place, which Best Pal secured by : standing the final drive more gamely. The three-quarters was run in 1:10. JUVENILES FAST TIME. Gallaher Brothers Menifee, winner of the sixth. race, showed an excellent performance when he won after a display of high speed from Annihilator in the fast time of 1 :11. It was an outstanding, performance by a two-year-old this year. .Menifee moved into the lead with a rush and promptly raced into defeat Titan and Bow Bowers, his earliest followers. He continued gamely during the last quarter, when he was expected to tire, and held Annihilator safe at all stages. Annihilator was the favored one and he raced forwardly and prominently for the entire way. Tilka, after working his way forwardly, held on long enough to outstay the slowly beginning Old Slip. Titan retired fast after reaching the stretch and finished in last place. Todays regular attendance was augmented by a considerable number of "left overs," which had come to these parts from other sections to witness Saturdays International Special. Many will remain for the remainder of the week to view the running of the La-tonia Championship Stakes for three-year-olds at a mile and three-quarters. Conditions were ideal for the racing and the sport was on a par with the best that has been witnessed at Latonia. Several of the finishes elicited considerable excitement. Betting activities were in keeping with the good patronage and, as most of the winners came in for extensive support, even if favorites did suffer failure, the greater portion of the throng was handsomely repaid fcr their journey aside from witnessing some excellent racing. MIDWESTERN SURPRISES. The mile and a sixteenth race furnished the main upset of the afternoon by the victory of Midwestern. In a former start, when ridden by E. Kummer, he showed to poor advantage due to the bad handling he had. He finished far back on that occasion. Under Merglers guidance today he raced vastly improved and came away from his opponents in the stretch to win well under restraint. Hi3 task would have been much more difficult had Brunell been ridden better. That racer, as a result of Griffins poorly judged ride, was all over the track and repeatedly a sufferer, but he finished gamely near the end and outstayed Sakah for second place. The latter, after showing most speed, began tiring near the end and came back to the stand with a perceptible limp. The five platers that met in the mile race were accorded diversified and extensified backing with Uproar a slight favorite. There was a mix-up immediately after the start and Minus, having a clear course, was! greatly benefited and moved promptly into, a good lead which she increased steadily I in the stretch to win, as her rider, Peternel, j a recent comer from Aurora, elected, j Parader, which had been one of the principal figures in the mix-up when he bore" over, outstayed Elias O.. one of the chief sufferers in the interference. Uproar raced forwardly until the last quarter, where he began giving way steadily. Jockey Stutts began the day in auspicious style when he brought Rapid Day home a winner in the opener and followed up his initial success by landing Star Sweeper, one of the extreme outsiders, a victor in the second race that brought to the post a dozen juvenile maidens. Continued on sixteenth page. ZEVS THIRD STRAIGHT Continued from first page. Rapid Day showed a fine performance for he was one of the rear guard at the start and had to close an immense gap to reach the leaders, but he came on in a style that could not be denied and he fought it out in the last sixteenth with the favorite Newmarket He won by a head. Newmarket finishing in advance of Kindred. Star Sweeper raced forwardly and kindly throughout. He was a close attendant of Down Town for most of the way and wore him down in the last sixteenth to win drawing out. Down Town had no difficulty beating home Brownie, the favorite. Muldraugh and jockey E. McClung seem a winning combination, for again they scored ! handily when they landed in front in the closing race. Queen Charming, under hard riding, finished in second place, just managing to outstay Bean King. The latter was probably best but lost much ground by a wide sweep when ridden wide in the stretch. Cloister, which finished in fourth place, was claimed for ?2.900 by J. McGee. "V
