LACKING IN FEATURES : Wednesdays Program at Downs of the Off-Day Variety. Braedalbane First in Most Pretentious Race of Afternoon Five Favorites Make Good. LOUISVILLE, Ky., Oct. 20 Todays racing offering at Churchill Downs had a decidedly off-day aspect, as the program gave opportunity to the more mediocre horses to earn purses. The lack of features did not, however, cause any falling off in attendance, lor the full strength of racing enthusiasts in these parts, particularly the clubhouse contingent, were out in full force and they seemed to enjoy the sport thoroughly. Some of the contests were interesting, hard fought, with the victor in doubt until the closing strides. "Weather and track conditions were again of the best. The stellar a.traction was possibly the fifth. It brought together some fairly good sprinters, with Braedalbane the favored one. He made good, but he had to extend himself to his utmost to wear down Marvin May. The start marred the race to a considerable extent, for it found Surf Rider practically left at the post and Pretty Politician declining to begin with the others. Surf Riders jockey did not persevere with him after his bad getaway and he was eased up all during the race. Marvin May had a slight advantage and his rider hustled him promptly into the lead. Braedalbane had been a laggard at the start, but under hustling tactics ho moved up fast and just before reaching the stretch was in a contending position. He continued gamely and succeeded in wearing down Marvin May in the last eighth to win drawing out. Marvin May had no difficulty retaining second place from Pindar Peel, which was up in time to head Marionette. LITTLE VISITOR BEST. The sixth race, a three-quarters dash, brought to the post a dozen youngsters, but Little Visitor raced as if much the best, for she won as her rider pleased. The battle for second place was a spirited one, with Deeming, Bignonia, Agnes Call and Buttress so closely grouped that it was difficult to separate them. Deeming lasted to win second money, with Bignonia following. Little Visitor was the favored one and justified the extensive backing she received. Backers of favorites inaugurated the day auspiciously when they selected Cherrycote as the likely one to land the opening purse. She had little difficulty winning, after having led for the entire way. Magic Wand, which recently was claimed by A. E. Barrett, was closest in pursuit of the winner throughout and finished in second place, with Hats Up following. After many efforts Parader finally managed to land a purse. His victory came in the second race, and again the favorite followers scored. Parader indulged Lugs with the lead until straightened for the stretch, where he drew by to win well under restraint Lugs, continuing gamely, held to second place, shaking off Trapnets cha lenge with case. MISS ROSEDALE SURPRISES. Miss Rosedale, racing in her best form, furnished the surprise of the third race, which she won well under restraint from Johnnie Jewell, while Spanish Rose was in third place. Watchful and Volt came in for considerable backing in the race, but both ceased to figure in the result after the stretch racing began. Fifteen two-year-olds furnished the con--. test in the fourth race and victory here fell to AVaterflag, one of the lucky ones from the start. She won well in hand from Midnight Rose, with Dr. Tanner in third place. Had -Midnight Rose or Dr. Tanner been away more forwardly at the start they would have reversed the decision with the winner. Both closed big gaps in the last half mile and were gaining strongly near the end. Span-. dor, one of the starters" in the race, was claimed at a cost of ,500 by W. S. Bruce. After many attempts Georgie finally managed to land the first purse that he has scored for owner Nicholls since the latter claimed him several years ago. Georgie was pounds the best of those he met and he won with consummate ease from Frank Gailor, which just managed to outstay Provident for second place. Georgie was a strong favorite and his success marked the victory of five choices for the afternoon.
