Sun Lady, Vrana and Ten Sixty finished in the order named in the Ellerslie Handicap, feature of Laurel racing this afternoon. A length separated the first two and a length separated the second and third at the end. L. Lang rode the winner, his second of the afternoon. The Sun Briar filly carried the silks of Mrs. F. Farrar. Silk Tassel, next to the inside rail, and Ten Sixty, outside of her, showed the way to the other four starters. Ten Sixty was in the better going. Sun Lady was behind them early. Nearing the turn into the stretch, Silk Tassel tired and gave way to Ten Sixty, the latter drawing clear and appearing to have the race won. However, when challenged by Sun Lady in the final eighth Ten Sixty had nothing left and proved an easy victim. Sun Lady finished with fine speed and was a length in front as the winning line was crossed. In the meantime Vrana, from the stable of J. K. L. Ross, came from the rear rapidly under Pete Walls call, and in a tcfriffic closing rush, passed Ten Sixty for second place and was gaining on the winner. The track was slow today, although drying out steadily. Light clouds hung in the. sky, but rain does not seem imminent. James Arthurs Duckling, ridden by L. Lang, got up in the closing strides to win the opener by a neck from Wuhu, which had made the pace from the start. Parmachenee Belle finished third. The race was for two-year-olds at three-quarters and Wuhu lead from the start and looked all over the winner, entering the stretch. However, Duckling which had come from the rear in sensational style, overhauled the Headley standard bearer and outgamed him in the final strides after a sparkling performance. The Consolation Steeplechase Handicap was the race through the field and it furnished a surprise in the victory of the J. E. Wideners Saint Pancras. This French-bred jumper was the outsider in the betting, but fencing cleanly, under a good ride, gained on the leaders at the final turn of the field and passing Boatman in a hard drive gamely held the latter safe in the run on the flat. Boatman was the pacemaker and led by a wider margin during the first half of the race, then tired and proved no match for the eventual winner. Top Notch finished third and Gravity, a first-time starter, jumped well but failed to stay. The third offering of the afternoon was at three-quarters for all ages and the winner turned up in Sea Sand, which beat Lester Continued on sixteenth page. It was the latter that showed the way to the stretch, where Sea Sand displaced her from the lead and held sway the remainder of the way. Babin had to shake up Sea Sand when Lester Doctor threatened The Swenke racer loomed up dangerously on the far turn and under Parkes vigorous finish was gaining on the winner at the end. Guided in the comparatively good going along the outside by Ivan Parke, Gray Gables got up in the drive to win the fourth by two lengths from Tjandi. He carried the silks of H. G. Bedwell. Red Wine was third of the party of six at the end of the mile and a sixteenth. Tjandi could have opened up an easy lead going to the first turn, but was rated around the bend after assuming a good position and allowed Dernier Sou to go to the front in the backstretch. Straightening out, the son of Pommern disposed of Dernier Sou, but could not shake off Gray Gables and was fully extended to outlast Red Wine for second place. Gray Gables was favorite and his victory decidedly popular. Five of the eleven named overnight for the seventh withdrew in tne most pronounced bit of scratching of the meeting. Vice-Chairman, with R. Pierce astride, won by a length and a half from Louis A. Seths Flower was third at the end of a mile and an eighth.
