REVIEW OF KENTUCKY RACING SEASON OF 1924 Total of ,675,525 Distributed in Stakes and Purses During Current Year Majority of Turf Prizes Fall to Horsemen of Blue Grass State Gallaher Bros. Largest Winner on Circuit Chilhowee Leads the Horses Riding Honors to Stutts Racing in Kentucky during the year 1924 was the most brilliant and successful in the history of the turf in that state, one of the chief industries of which is the breeding and iaising of thoroughbreds. The tempting array of richly endowed stakes and overnight races offered by the Kentucky racing associations induced many of the largest and most powerful racing establishments of the East to send their stars to Kentucky to compete with the foremost horses of the West for these prizes. As a result nearly all of the best horses of the country at one time or another were seen in action over the Kentucky tracks and naturally record-breaking attendances were attracted to Churchill Downs and Latonia to witness these giants of the thoroughbred world meet in speed and stamina testing struggles. The golden anniversary of the famous Kentucky Derby was celebrated this year and one of the largest crowds that ever witnessed a horse race in this country assembled at Churchill Downs on that eventful Saturday afternoon in May when Black Gold won that historical race. Another tremendous gathering was attracted to Latonia in the fall when the International Special No. 3 was decided, in which Sarazen reached the pinnacle of his fame in defeating the French champion Epinard and the best of the American horses in training in one of the greatest and fastest contests ever run anywhere. Horsemen found Kentucky a fertile field during 1924, when the immense sum of S1,G75,525 was distributed in stakes and purses. This is a record for the Blue Grass State, those figures surpassing any previous year. This was in a measure attributable to the opening of the new Raceland track, the Tri-State Fair and Racing Association disbursing a total of 28,413 during the twenty-one days of racing at that newest of Kentucky tracks. i " Latonia, with its longer meetings both spring and fall, was the largest contributor to the total distribution for the year with ,136 to its credit. Churchill Downs gave G9,S43 and Lexington 5G,333. I v Here are the complete statistics for the year, embracing many interesting details of j racing over the Kentucky tracks: V. V. V. Gallaher Bros., due mainly to the prowess of Chilhowee, was the largest money winner, with twenty victories and ?S9,S74 to their credit. J. N. Camden, president of the Kentucky Jockey Club and one of the most prominent breeders of the Blue Grass state, enjoyed a most successful year from a racing standpoint, horses of his own breeding figuring importantly at the different meetings in his home state. Collectively they won forty-three races, finished second in forty-one, third in twenty-three, and earned a total of G7,435. The Idle Hour Farm of E. R. Bradley was another Kentucky establishment that was among the big winners on the circuit. The Bradley horses finished first in thirty-six races, second in twenty-eight, third in thirty-four, and accounted for ,567 in stakes and purses. Two women owners figured conspicuously in Kentucky racing. One, Airs. R. A I. Hoots, of Oklahoma, was the first woman to ever win the coveted Kentucky Derby when Black Gold carried her colors to triumph in that historical and valuable race. Mrs. Hoots total winnings in Kentucky amounted to 7,325. Mrs. W. K. Vanderbilt Avon only one race in Kentucky, but that was one of the most important of the year, the International Special No. 3, at Latonia, in which the great Sarazen emerged victorious and added 5,500 to the coffers of the Fair Stable, Among other owners that have reason to feel satisfied with their campaign over Kentucky tracks are the Audley Farm Stable, with winnings of 9,7G2 ; H. P. Headley, 9,673 ; Williams Bros., 7,301 ; D. Breckinridge, 5,100 ; H. P. Whitney, 0,58S ; G. A. Cochran, G,95C ; J. Livingston, G,243, and M. Goldblatt, 0,73G. Black Gold was the second largest winner, with 7,325 to his credit His greatest triumph was, of course, in the Golden Jubilee Kentucky Derby, worth 2,775 to the winner. Sarazen started only ence in Kentucky this year, but in that race, the International Special No. 3 at Latonia, he virtually clinched his claim on the championship of his age when he defeated Epinard and the best of the American horses that were able to start in that race. The net value of that race was 5,500. Other big winners on the Kentucky tracks were Master Charlie, with 6,010 to his credit, Princess Dorecn with 3G90, Kentucky Cardinal with 0,700, Sweep Park with S,G00, Captain Hal with 7,7G0, Candy Kid with 5,984, Altawood with 5,955 and many more, the following being a list of the horses that accounted for ,000 or more each : Horse. 1st. 2d. 3d.
