CAPTAIN HALS MILE ♦ Best of Any Derby Candidate at Louisville to Date. Covers Route in 1:41 Under Re-traint — Quatrain Also Given Useful Gallop by Owner. » LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 23.— Captain Hal, locally owned Kentucky Derby candidate, gave the work watchers at Churchill Downs Thursday morning something to talk about when he was sent out for a trial at one mile and ran the distance in 1 :41. which time has not been equalled by any other locally trained Derby aspirant this season. The colt, with jockey J. Heupel in the saddle, showed his usual dash and vim and a strong inclination to run. He performed j ! his task in easy fashion and demonstrated to the interested throng of onlookers that I I he is about ready for the bugle call. The ! j trial was n t marked by any incident except that the colt showed a disposition to bear i Mt rounding the turn into the homestretch, i i He displayed his usual high order of speed, running the first half in :48. Had he been j ! allowed to have his head, the son of Black | ; Toney and Wavering could have negotiated ! i the distance in :46 and a fraction. As it was, Heupel had him under control all the j way. Some idea of the merit of the trial , can be gained from the following fractions : :11%. :23%, :35%, :48, 1:00%, 1:14. 1:27%, 1:41. The colt was galloped out an extra furlong in 1 :55%. WELL ADVANCED. Captain Hal has been advancing steadily j in his training and improving with each i work and will be a fit horse on Derby Day. His best previous trial was a mile in 1 :42%, I on April 16. Until Captain Hals mile today Lee O. Cotner had turned in the fastest mile, his ] time being 1 :41*s. I Trainer Walter Hopkins has decided to j complete Captain Hals training on the Derby battleground. The splendid showing of Captain Hal. however, did not absorb all of j the work watchers attention, for they j evinced keen interest when Quatrain was brought out, and under Frederick Johnsons direction was galloped five-eighths. At no time during the trial, or when he was being led back to his stable, did he display any signs of soreness. The colt started at the five-eighths post. and. running in his usual impressive fashion, covered the five-eighths in 1 :02%. Mr. Johnson had intended that he should not run the distance in time better than 1 :05. Mr. Johnson will participate in the Lexington meeting. Thursday he shipped Princess I Adele by van to the Blue Crass track, where , she is an intended starter in the Ashland ; Oaks opening day. Prior to being shipped I the filly was given a good workout, running three-quarters in 1 :1." %. Lon Johnson sent Elsass three-eighths in I :40. Lee O. Cotner, Borderland, Needle Gun. . Our General, Boon Companion and the other Derby colts were only galloped. ♦ -— —
